Where to go with children 5 & 7

Hi All - We are taking our two children aged 5 & 7 to Moscow this summer to visit family and want to do a side trip somewhere in Europe - possibly Istanbul, while we are over there from the US. I am looking for suggestions on places that are family friendly, not too expensive and interesting for kids. I know this is pretty vague but we really don't know where to begin, only that we want to take advantage of already being in Europe and going somewhere fun for the kids after Moscow. Thanks for any suggestions!

Have you thought about the Baltics? We had an interesting time in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia a couple of years ago. Certainly wasn't expensive by Western European standards but depends what you mean by family friendly. Not the easiest of destinations but some beautiful places, interesting history and fast changing countries. We managed to entertain ourselves for three weeks cycle touring and found all kinds of unusual things to see and do. Let me know if you want to know more.

We took our 8 year old to Turkey in Sept. Had a brilliant time and it is very kid friendly. We travelled down the West coast from Istanbul to Antalya and did a 3 day cruise on a beautiful gulet. I would highly recommend Turkey.

Maybe Barcelona? Beautiful city with a beach! Not too expensive and childfriendly.
