Are you flying with Air Asia to Thailand? Don't even worry about it. I've flown into Thailand one way with Air Asia, Jet Airways, Druk Air, Thai Airways, United, Korean, American, Japan, Cambodian, Laotian, Asiana, etc. Never had a problem.

Flying one-way from KL (or anywhere else within SE Asia) you should be ok. It's more likely an (airline policy) issue if flying from US/AU/NZ/etc where they might insist on seeing onward tickets. Immigration at Phuket airport won't even check.

You need to try to board the flight first. If you can tell them your travel plans, you'll probably get checked in without having to produce proof of onward travel. Make and print an itinerary if you can - it's easy these days!

My advice - arrive at airport EARLY. If they will not let you check in, then you go to an internet cafe / terminal and book a One Way. The cheapest you can book out of Thailand 99% of the time is AirAsia from Hat Yai to Kuala Lumpur. It's usually the cheapest airline, and that's usually the cheapest route - generally speaking you will NOT find cheaper on another carrier. Promo fare is 1,090 Baht

Next cheapest is often Bangkok to Phnom Penh, also AirAsia - promo fare around 1690 Baht. Of course, fare depends upon dates!

You've left it late to expect cheap fares. I know you know, but you planned badly - would have been cheaper to get the Tourist Visa in the first place. You CAN still do that from KUL as long you're not there during Christmas/New Year closing.

Having said that, I've flown from KUL into Thailand many times on AirAsia on a One-Way and never been asked to show proof. Who told you that you'll need it?

With AA, check in now online, print off your boarding pass then on the day if you have check in luggage, just go to the bag drop counter. Being asked for proof of onward travel at that stage is extremely slim.

Thank you all for the advice! I know that it was a bad idea, we just didn't think about it when we were booking the flight ... After we organzed everything for China, Nepal and India we never thought that it would be difficult to enter Thailand because it's so popular :-) And especially our route to Laos and so on ...

never needed an onward flight out of Thailand before as it has so many land borders.
if you ever do need an onward air ticket (that your not going to use) buy a full fare fully refundable ticket direct from the airline (ideally on your credit card) and just refund it once used for the immigration purposes.
most it will end up costing you is any changes in the exchange rate between purchase date and refund date.

Same as me, I was never asked for an onward air ticket, no matter which airline I used, Bangkok Air, Air Asia, Lao Air. Just board the plane and go from LCCT to BKK and you are fine :-)
