Best way to get from Espirito Santo (Vitora/ Guarapari area) to Teresoplis

Hi,

We're trying to travel from Espirito Santo (Vitora/ Guarapari area) to Teresoplis on Dec 28th. Can anyone advise on the best way to do this? Is it possible to do this without traveling through Rio de Janeiro either via plane or bus?

Thanks,

Mitch

There is probably a bus or series of buses you could take. But I bet flying from Vitoria to Rio and taking the bus from there might even take less time and might cost around the same.

I don't think there's a direct bus from Vitória or Guarapari to Teresópolis. You probably have to go to Rio and than take another bus. Besides, there are no airports in Terê.

Ah-ha, this is one that I can answer which is rare!
You will need to get a bus from Vitoria to Macae via Campos. There you will transfer over to the 1001 service to Nova Friburgo which runs through the Serramar highway (NOT the one that goes through Rio). In Nova Friburgo, you will need to go all the way through to the Northern bus station (rodaviaria norte) instead of getting off at the rodaviaria sul (southern bus station). It's not all that complicated and the first two tickets can be bought online.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm also trying to find a rental car agency that will allow us to rent the car in Vitora and return it in Teresopolis. No luck online so far. If you know of such a company, please pass along their name or URL.

Looking into flights as well but of course then we have to get from the Rio airport to the bus station and then to Teresopolis.

Thanks,

Mitch

One way rental car drop-off fees are quite high in Brazil. (One poster here estimates R$1 per km.) And if you haven't driven in Brazil (or travelled widely by road), you may be in for a major surprise regarding (lack of) quality of roads, vastness and isolation of parts of the country, crazy drivers, etc, not to mention that if anything happens, no one speaks Portuguese and you're on your own in the middle of nowhere.

GOL (for one) has a flight from Vitoria to the in-town airport in Rio, Santos Dumont (for R$166, and I can see that fare online right now, and others at other times a bit more, but not outrageous.) and that puts you just a few minutes inexpensive taxi ride from the bus station.

Great info, thanks! I'm wary of the driving situation there and have noticed the expense especially of the one-way charges. I've traveled quite a bit in SA (but not Brazil) , Asia, Africa so I have a sense what we'd be in for. Or at least a sense of how different it will be from the US.

Our latest thinking after reading your emails is to leave Guarapiri a day earlier and stop in Macaes or Nova Friburgo for a nite before continuing on. In other words, break the trip up spend an afternoon and evening in an intermediate town or city and then continue on.

Thanks again for taking the time. We leave in a week and are excited!

You could stop at Lumiar which is about 40 minutes before Friburgo. It is a small village with a few waterfalls and rivers. The bus goes straight through the middle of it and there are plenty of pousadas. Alternatively, you could stop at Rio das Ostras which has a pleasant beach in the middle of town. Much nicer than Macae.

Indeed, given a choice between Rio dsa Ostras and Macaé, the choice of Rio das Ostras is an easy one. Of course, you never know, you may find some social cachet overnighting in the city with the highest homicide rates in the state. :-)
