Point to point tickets, bought in advance might be of great savings. Think about it first, before considering buying a country pass. Just check at www.oebb.at/en and buy yout (international) tickets in advance. But pay attention: the only "inconvenient" thing ist that if you buy the advanced saver tickets you are forced to take the specific train(s) selected at the buying process. Otherwise you will be considered as a traveller without a ticket.

"a 12 yr old" is considered as a child (half fare) by Swiss Federal railways and as an adult in the other 3 countries.
Munich - Zurich is usually cheaper by bus than by train

So if my first train trip is Zurich - Innsbruck, I should buy it from the swiss rail so my 12 yr old can get kids price?

For Austria - what about this VORTEILScard i have seen on the OBB site. Is that something I have access to.
And can we use it for Innsbruck -Salzburg - Vienna and possibly to Prague???

There are several types of VORTEILSCARDS, which give you 50% discount if you buy the ticket online or at the machine and 45% if you buy it at the counter. There is as well 25% of discount after you cross the border: www.oebb.at/en/Customer_cards/VORTEILScard/index.jsp

Just to inform you that between Vienna and Salzburg a private competitor is as well serving this route: www.westbahn.at/en
You can board Westbahn trains even without having a ticket, buy your ticket on board with cash or card without any penalty fees. The price is 25 Euros, which is the exact price of the Governmental carrier ÖBB with the 50% discount of the Vorteilscard.

50 per cent up to the border station of Buchs SG or St. Margrethen, then according to OeBB tariff.

Let me just tell you the price of an advanced ticket from Zurich to Innsbruck for you both: 38 Euros in 2nd class and 58 Euros in 1st

And now calculate if any other option (including the purchase of a VorteilsCard) is more convenient.
