hiking in reunion in april
hii am planning a trip to reunion tentatively from april 18 - april 30. my plan is to hike the GR R1 in about 6 days. my concern is that this time period may still be in the rainy season as some sources say the rainy season lasts until may while other sources say the dry season begins late april. i realize that weather is unpredictable especially in a place like reunion, but i was wondering if this would be too early in the season to hike this route or is late april really the beginning of the dry season on the island and therefore should be ok for hiking. thanks.

With your dates you should be OK in my opinion (take it from someone who's spent 18 years on Reunion!), but as you say yourself weather can be unpredictable - you could have torrential rain the whole time (but it's unlikely), or, you could not see a spot of rain. Bear in mind that it rains more in the mountains, but also that if you wait any longer in the year the weather will be colder. Bring rain gear with you, but if all goes well you shouldn't need it.2
In my opinion as well, you should be fine. And 6 days is a long time. I have done the GRR1 just last month (and unfortunately, it did rain on us and we were tent camping so it wasn't the funnest.) It really is hard to tell so far in advance. And even if it does rain and your hike is cut short, I would recommend doing the portion starting in Cilaos, advancing to the Col de Taibit through Marla and then to La Nouvelle. A lot of beautiful things to see there: col de taibit, les trois roches, plaine des sables. And it can be done enjoyably in 2-3 days.ADVERTISEMENT
