arriving late in Chiang Mai

Howdy - arrive in Chiang Mai about 7pm on 5th Jan. Will I have trouble finding reasonably priced accommodation in the old city or should I book.

I woudn't book, you might feel better if you do. The sois off Moonmuang will have plenty of choices in the cheaper bracket

And in Thailand, 7pm is far from late to arrive anywhere.

Thanks - Im not worried about looking for somewhere as long as I have a few options or location to start with.
Happy to spend up to 1000B and somewhere quiet and atmospheric is good.

cheers

I would book ahead if you've never been to Chiang Mai. Not that you'll have a problem finding a place with a room - but by the time you get to the Old Town, it will be 8pm, dark ... and your wandering around unfamiliar Soi's looking for a place. Never fun.

If you were a cheapo backpacker looking for any 200 baht guesthouse room (which mostly don't take pre-bookings anyway) I'd say just wing it. But if you're looking for a 1000 baht semi-posh place I'd say book ahead, especially since you already know your arrival date. Try Agoda.
