Laptop and Camera

Hello all,

I will be studying abroad and traveling in China and I intend to bring a laptop and a camera with me. Being just out of high-school my budget isn't very high. My goal is to find a laptop that is durable, has decent processing power and if possible dedicated graphics, and also a decent camera for around or under $1000. Preferably the camera will be compact, but as for the laptop so long as it isn't gigantic weight isn't an issue. Any recommendations?

Thanks

You may want to poke around some computer forums, I am not in the USA. But ... they would have a bit more competition. Toshiba or Asus or highly regarded, you may get one around $700US, the camera might be a Canon S95 or the newer one, have a look at bhphotovideo.com for the best prices and a trusty store.

Now that Canon has introduced the S100, the S95 has been reduced in price. I really like my S95 - it also takes RAW photos which allow a lot more creative editing.

I have found the S100 on sale for cheaper than the S95 on amazon. Is there any reason not to get the S100? Some people talked about issues in low light. Unless the difference is horrible, it shouldn't be an issue for me.

If you are wanting a compact camera rather than a DSLR I would recommend any of the panasonic TZ models. Very capable cameras considering the size.

@Explorer121
You can roll a dice.

All these camera are pretty much the same and remember these cameras may only have 2yrs before the next model is released. I know someone who used his wife's S95 and printed a sunset picture of the Hong Kong skyscrapers at 18x24 inches. He left his digital SLR at home.

I appreciate it. The laptop problem has been solved so now its just about a camera. Preferably under $300
