Sicily 4 days Over New Years

HI All,

We are travelling into Trapani on the 29th December and will be in Sicily only until the 2nd of January leaving out from Trapani. Its a bit annoying that we need to go back to finish in the same place rather than move east..

We are a 25-30 yr old couple with a 3 yr old. Experienced travellers...just done a 5 day hectic trip around cyprus.

Now I have a couple of questions

1 Where should we be for new years - wont be crazy but would like some sort of celebration (im guessing larger city ie Palermo)
2. Can we get to the east (Catania/Taormina - Mt Etna) and back in that time?
3. If not what would you recommend for 3-4 full days of things to do and see?

We are open to any ideas. °

Most likely will hire a car.

Thanks alot

Jeremy

Biggest 'party' will be in Palermo for sure..even if it is nothing exceptional.Fireworks and a concert in the main square (Politeama).

Not enough time to go the east coast...I'd stick to the west and Palermo..that is plenty for 4 days.

Where depends on your interests..what do you like? Ruins, nature, food, small towns, cities, churches etc etc?

I agree with lucapal, but if you really more intersseted in Catania it's a 3 hour drive from Trapani on very good roads.

HI so you think Stay in Palermo and use it as the base?

You think it would be impossible (or too rushed) to get to the east and Palermo in 4 nights?

We want to see everything we can that is possible. MT Etna would be amazing but looks unlikely?

What about staying for New years on the east coast?

You can do as you like of course...

It is possible to drive from one side of the island to the other in a few hours...if you are happy to spend all your days driving rather than seeing or doing anything, you could just about get around the whole island ;-)

Mt Etna will be...cold,covered in snow, and impossible to climb (unless you are an experienced mountaineer). If it is not raining you should be able to see it from the East Coast around Catania,Taormina etc.

Ok

after consideration its goign to be too hard to do the east coast at all.

so we will concerntrate on the west coast.

where else would you consider going to on the west besides palermo. I see places like segesta and Agrigento look amazing.

what else would you recommend for sites to see.

also should we base ourselves in Palermo every night or should we stay somewhere else?

Well...if you arrive and leave from Trapani, you could see Erice (its near) and Segesta (its on the way to Palermo).

Agrigento is a bit out of the way..possible but you will spend a day driving there and back.

Two days in Palermo is not a huge amount at all..there is a lot to see in the city.

thanks for your reply

Would it be best to go something like this for accommodaiton?

29th Trapani
30th somewhere in the south west
31st Palermo
1st Trapani

Or should we just keep it simple and spend both 30-31st in palermo

ok..you are going to have to stay in TP for the first and last night then.

I'd spend the middle 2 in Palermo...then you can go to Segesta on the second day (on the way)..maybe Erice on the way too or on the afternoon of the first day.

Really don't think you have time for Agrigento as well.....

so looks like something like this:

29th afternoon: TP area walking around etc
30th: go to Erice and Segesta on the way to Palermo
31st: Palermo and surroundings
1st: everything will be quiet so i guess Palermo (unless you recommend something) and drive back to TP in evening

sounds ok?

Where would you stay in TP - Near the coast/beach?

Thanks so much for your help!!

Sounds eminently doable..

I'd probably stay in the town itself..the centro storico is nice, and there are a few things to see and do around there.

Hello!

I will stay with my friend from 28th of december to 3rd of january. My plan by now is:

28. Trapani Airport to Agrigento
29. to Syrakus
30. Catania
31. Taormina
1. Taormina
2. Palermo
3. Trapani Airport

A lot to drive and do but i like action :) I am unsure where staying for New Years Eve is the best. Catania, Taormina, Syrakus or Palermo... Thats the big question. Any suggestions?

More than 'action'...I hope you like your car.And the motorway.

That is all you are going to see for a week....
