Where in Surat Thani? From Donsak, if it was me I would hire a car to Krabi and take the ferry from there. Will take approx 2.5 hours plus ferry time and waiting for ferry time.If from Surat town then I would either hire a car or take the train to Trang and a taxi from there directly to the island.
I'm sure there will be buses direct to Krabi town though if taxis are not your thing and people with more knowledge on this will no doubt be along shortly.

Yes you can get transport from Koh Samui to Krabi. An all day trip though. Go into the Government bus booking office in Nathon and book there.14
You'd have to take a train then a bus. Looks like there are only 2 trains going through ST to Trang. One at 4.27am and the other at 6.28am though they'll most likely be late like most Thai trains.
