Itchy patchy legs - Railay beach

Bastard sand flies.

Never encountered them before and it would appear that unlike mozzies they are active during part of the day too. After just half a day my legs are covered in big uneven red patches / bites on my legs and they itch a lot more than mozzie bites.

Anyway - just a reminder to add repellant during the day too.

If they are sandfly bites you are going to be in agony.

I'm so itchy I feel like I'm going to go insane. Going in search of antihistamines now as my anti itch cream does nothing.

Go hit the pharmacies at Ao Nang and get some pink calamine lotion on those bites (before they reach "pizza stage" ;-)

They are at the pizza stage already becaue I itched through my sleep. The antihistamines have helped somewhat though. Still itchy though...

Be careful going into the sea with those bites as for some reason the salt water 'reactivates' the itchiness! Every beach we go to we check first if there are sandflies as we both really react badly to them.

Poor you, you have my sympathy, nothing ruins a tan faster than sand flies.
It's irresponsible in tourist areas, in my opinion warnings should be posted on beaches, aka red flags, as a few minutes can literally ruin the rest of your holiday.
Don't forget to rub pure coconut oil over your suntan lotion on your feet and legs if walking on the beach again, it stops them latching on and biting.

#7 How do you successfully check for sand flies without being bitten at all, after all you can't see them ?

Research on the internet beforehand. Someone is bound to have mentioned sand flies at some point when I'm researching online, it's worked well so far and we have only been caught out once.

You can see them when you are on the beach. If you sit very still with your feet in the sand you will be able to see the sand flies land on your feet.
