Cheap places to stay, preferably free, during Sydney new years?
I am travelling Australia and starting with new year celebrations in Sydney. I am looking for a great place to enjoy the celebrations and then some cheap accomodation, I will have a tent are there any places to pitch near downtown sydney? Also wheres the best place to celebrate for free but still be in it all? Any ideas would be appreciated4
Actually, Cockatoo Island would be the closest paid camping site, but that in no way can be described as cheap, and like many other areas would be well and truly booked out for NYE.6
Libby, is this which one you are referring to, that they on the island do have special allowed camping for the NYE fireworks?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockatoo_Island_(New_South_Wales)

Yes, This is it, DC. But their rates, even in the off-season, are astronomical for campsites, although it's a phenomenal location.Edited by: libbyh

There are no legal places to camp downtown or close to the Sydney CBD You might as well just go to bondi beach and sleep there, there will be plenty of completely drunk people asleep there on NYE. You'll get moved on quite early in the morning though
