Cheap places to stay, preferably free, during Sydney new years?

I am travelling Australia and starting with new year celebrations in Sydney. I am looking for a great place to enjoy the celebrations and then some cheap accomodation, I will have a tent are there any places to pitch near downtown sydney? Also wheres the best place to celebrate for free but still be in it all? Any ideas would be appreciated

I think that they just announced further price rises for holding the event..
as far as free camping in concerned..
find a beach - any beach - just not the ones where all the backpackers hang out and upset all the locals..

There are no places you can pitch it near the downtown area, i assume you are looking for a camping site, you have to pay a little to stay in them but you do say 'PREFERABLY FREE, is this a wind up?

Just head downtown towards the harbour, you will find yourself in the celebrations. Finding somewhere to pitch your tent may be harder - certainly not downtown. Lane Cove Tourist Park is the closest paid camping site, but may be already booked out for New Year.

Actually, Cockatoo Island would be the closest paid camping site, but that in no way can be described as cheap, and like many other areas would be well and truly booked out for NYE.

Libby, is this which one you are referring to, that they on the island do have special allowed camping for the NYE fireworks?

Yes, This is it, DC. But their rates, even in the off-season, are astronomical for campsites, although it's a phenomenal location.

There are no legal places to camp downtown or close to the Sydney CBD You might as well just go to bondi beach and sleep there, there will be plenty of completely drunk people asleep there on NYE. You'll get moved on quite early in the morning though
