Myanmar people legendary kindness.

Burmese have the reputation of sweet kind people witch addresses a majority of the people leaving in the third world under very precarious survival conditions, low income, poverty and « happiness »
Now it is still true in remote areas or for what you’ll happen to perceive for the first couple week of your stay in the country.
After being for sometime in Burma you’ll start seeing the rampant hypocrisy
Burmese are the most cunning little folks there is and they do not have the Thais commercial smile and good will or at least the know how.
Beside after digging a bit the legendary kindness of the Burmese you’ll realize that partially due to the two currencies, two prices system enforced by the Military government an the fact that by coming to Myanmar you agree to pay most of the necessaries double or more the price the local do, which with time make them perceive you (us) as a dupe, the sweet indigenous are in fact making a subtlety noticed effort not to look bored at the sight of an happy tourists pack arrival at the village
I’d suggest you read « River of the lost foot steps » before you go.
It’ll give you and idea of how loving and peaceful they are and a glimpse of their perception of the British hence of any white person.
Nevertheless Burmese are great folks
It is the meeting, the culture clash, the stirring,
Finally we are the one who make the first move.
Right??
JJ

Wow! after 8 times in 10 years I never noticed how Naive I must be Ha! Ha!
they spend 10,000 on te bus ticket and charge me with a smile 12,000kyat and they at noodles at 300kyat and charge me 3,000 kyat for meal with meat at restaurant . You Know I often wondered how on $30 a month they could afford to get drunk on myanmar beer at $2 a bottle crazy or WOT so they must be paying maybe 20 cents a bottle.
at least they smile and make me feel good about spending it there.
Take note this little girl smiles all day long at rich tourists never ever loses that smile, they brush past her push her out of the way and ignore her, I've seen them treat her really badly. I sat there 2 hrs watching because even I wpuld not pay the rip off tourist boat rate to Inwya Ha! Ha! She sells polished stone necklaces for $1.50 a time and makes around $1a day if lucky. Obviously still smiling she gives that money to her teacher for her education, books pens etc etc. I am only sorry she did not rip you off with a
her smile.

I actually just finished reading the River of Lost Footsteps and it's an amazing history of Burma from the old kingdoms up until the present day. What I got from the book is completely nothing like what the OP seems to be saying. I read from it every night in Burma and absolutely loved it, especially the parts about how magnificent their vast empires were. Can't say enough good things about the book and the wonderful history of the various groups and politics.

Last sentence.." never the less Burmese are great folks" quite clumsily written but what , I think, he is trying to say is that it aint Hobbitland and many Burmese are as mercenary as everywhere else.. Which is true of course...
