Temperatures in the day and night- December 2012

I am travelling to Cuba this saturday. The first week I will spend in Vinales -PInar del Rio - Maria la Gorda.
Second week in Havanna and thir week I will do a bike tour from Havanna to Trinidad.
I am thiking what to pack. Many people are telling me it can get very colt in the night in december. Is that right?
Do I need more summer dresses or more jeans and long sleeve shirts? Fleece jacket, rainy jacket?
Hope to be able to swim in the caribbean sea anyway.

It depends upon your definition of “cold”. Right now it does get “fresh” at night; and it can get colder for our standards. Yes, bring a rain jacket. Weather will depend upon the presence of a Cold Front –or not- during your stay. From now on predicting such thing is not possible.

As Jorge indicates the weather can be pretty variable.

According to what I have heard there has never been frost in Cuba. But I understand that the western part may have the lowest temperature, with night and early morning temperatures in cold spells at minimum extreme of 5 degrees C. When the temperature is low overcast and windy days may be chilly enough to want to put on two long sleeved pullovers, socks and thick trousers. Cubans say that the sea is cold in December and January, but this of course is realative to what you are used to.

You're from Switzerland? No, you won't be cold, not if your'e thinking about winter in Switzerland. Jeans would be handy, and a light jacket for the evenings perhaps, but a fleece isn't necessary.

One pair of long pants and a light fleece and you'll be fine, no worries.

A light rain jacket might be handy when you're stuck on the bike, otherwise rain is God's way of telling you to find a bar.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

I would say bring the fleece. I have been to cuba the last four december / januars. The last two has been pretty mild, where a cardigan or a thin sweater were the warmest clothing ive had to use. But the first two there were some nights were even a leather jacket weren't enough (one of those years, a group of mental patients at a institution supposedly died from the cold..).

You most likely won't have to use it, but if a cold front like that hits cuba again you will be very glad you brought it along.

Well now you've got all the conflicting advice that you need, best to look up the weather sites and make up your own mind as to how you will travel :-)

You'll be fine.

Today's high of 26 in Havana and projected low of 15 is expected to continue through this week. Next week is projected to be a few degrees warmer.

Early December it rarely gets what I would call cold - that is more often late December.

Cubans complain about the cold when it dips below 20 C.

Bob, there's no such thing as an accurate day-to-day Internet weather forecast for Cuba. None of them (including your link) have any connections to local weather stations in Cuba; they all generate their forecasts using weather prediction computer models tied into satellite imagery.

That's why none of them are accurate for day-to-day local weather forecasts and why they're utterly useless for extended local weather forecasts.

Ignore them all and simply use seasonal averages to give you an idea of what you'll likely experience.

Cheers,
Terry

Terry: there is a weather radar station in Key West, 90 miles away. I have heard that there is good cooperation between Cuba and the US on weather data but have not verified that personally. I do know that during hurricane Sandy passing over Cuba, we got current detailed information.
