Cross Country train journey... help planning?
Hello everyone,I have a friend coming up from Brazil in a few weeks, and we are planning on taking a cross country train trip.
So far, we will be going to my home state of North Carolina, from my current home of NYC, via train. There, we will get a car and do most of the state. After that, things are kind of up in the air. I think we'll go from Asheville to Greenville SC for another friend to catch a flight, and then continue on from there. We were looking at New Orleans, as that's more or less the only thing between Asheville and Texas worth doing. Any suggestions as to what to do after that? Colorado is on his list, and I kind of want to see parts of Texas.
I'm kind of a "culture" guy, not as in to nature. I prefer interesting cities with a variety of things to do and meeting cool people.
Any ideas for fun stopovers on the way to CO? Any suggestions on cool places to see in Texas? I'm not totally averse to doing something that is "natural" in scope, it's just not a focus. I remain open to any and all ideas/suggestions.
To condense, the loose outline is: NC, Louisiana, Texas, Colorado, SoCal, San Fran, Portland, Seattle. Thanks for any suggestions.

Where are you planning to restart your train journey after xAsheville? In other words, are you planning to get to Greenville and pick it back up, or are you flexible enough to head elsewhere?
How long is this trip?
Texas, Colorado
Have you looked at a route map? This is impossible by train without heading to either xChicago or L.A. (Ok, technically you can reach Colorado via xSt. Louis, but not the part most people want to see.)

bzookaj: Correct, we will be driving from Asheville to Greenville so one of our friends can catch a flight back to LA and then were planning to go from Gville to N.O. But yes, flexibility is possible.I had looked at a route map, but perhaps I misread it. I'll need to revisit that.
We will leave North Carolina like on the 30th or 31st. I need to be back in New York by say January 24th or so.
EDIT: yes, I just pulled up the map and you are of course correct. That's not very feasible. Perhaps we will drive that portion.

Fly to NO. Board the AMTRAK, From there with stops in San Antonio,& Alpine Texas(rent a car and spend a day in Big Bend Ntl. Park, Another stop in Tucson AZ., continuing to LA...The train goes every other day on that route so one has 48 hr. stopovers. On the back haul, if your yet up for more AMTRAK food & want to see Colorado...Fly to Salt Lake City...Book SLC Denver with a stopover in Glenwood Springs...Back to NYC by air...Happy t(rails)... carracarADVERTISEMENT
