Is it necessary to book accommodation in advance ?Hi Guys,
My wife and myself are planning to do a 20 day roadtrip from late January to Mid Febuary.
Auckland to Christchurch.
We are thinking of sleeping at cheap hotels, motels, B&B, lodges or similar places.
Our budget is aprox 150 NZD pr night.
Is it necessary to book accommodation in advance ? or can we just book/find accommodation as we drive along.
Trying to get an idea about how busy it will be ?
Thanx in advance

4Covers most of top half of North Island though. And main point is Aucklanders will be on holiday and it could be difficult getting accommodation in Coromandel or Bay of Plenty. I'm sure they would find something but it won't be as easy as rest of their trip.

7Auckland anniversary weekend is also bay of plenty, waikato and northland anniversary weekend. so it is much of the upper north island. Isn't Nelson anniversary weekend around then too?
Waitangi Day is on a Wednesday next year so won't be too much of a drama.
sneaker also has a good point re. the sevens in Wellington.
Your budget sounds like plenty for a motel, hotel, etc. Be aware that B&Bs in NZ tend to be a bit of a luxury option.

12Don't forget that it is also peak tourist season & Christchurch is going to remain hard to find beds until 1 or 2 more of the inner city hotels reopen - and Novotel has postponed its opening!!
