Oaxaca City to coast
We plan to fly to Oaxaca in February. Then travel down to coast, and then fly out from there. I traveled there extensively 30 years ago, but have no up to date info. Spanish fluent. Any suggestions on good quality transit? Security comments appreciated.1
"Good quality transit" might mean ADO's first-class OCC bus from Oaxaca to the coast, via Salina Cruz (by the way, this summer when I visited the first-class bus station in Oacaca city I noticed they're advertising first-class service via Miahuatlan, although I didn't see it in their schedule last time I checked). A faster route is directly through the mountains via colectivo van, but the condition of the vehicles varies, check the tires before you get in. I prefer the Dodge Sprinter or VW Crafter vans, there are many companies operating between Oaxaca city and the coast, so look around.Re "security," read the thread about a week or so ago about the teachers' blockades, more an inconvenience than a security issue.

You'll notice that the airport in Puerto Escondido has changed. Gone is the mud strip ending at the cliffs over Playa Bacocho, the piston-engine planes, and the open-air palapa that served as a terminal; now there's a paved strip suitable for jets just west of town and north of the highway and an air-conditioned building for waiting passengers.6
Hey Mclarjh...In my recollection, that change happened at least 15 years ago, probably more. More recent airport change: Oaxaca City terminal was completely revamped last summer. No more sub-terminal for coastal planes (where luggage wasn't scanned). No more upstairs cafeteria. No more non-passenger seating area. Cafeteria service seems to be at the gate areas, after check-in and baggage scan, but it wasn't open for the early morning flight to the coast a couple weeks ago. Warning: No coffee available in terminal for the 7 a.m. flight.
