Our holiday Vacation
Hi Everyone,My girlfriend and I are going to Bangkok for 3 days on January 2013. Since it's our first time going there, we are basically clueless. I was wondering if someone can help us out into the right direction? I talked to some of my friends and they actually gave me some tips and advice. Like staying around Platinum mall since everything is close by. She also said something about the Chatuchak market on weekends. Anyway, we wanted to go to museum, eat good food, go shopping, watch an elephant show, basically everything. And also, any recommendations for good hotels? Is platinum mall really a good area? I mean is it really close to everything? Where can I find the night market that serves different kinds of food? Are they open 24hrs? And we're planning on going to Pattaya for a day if possible. How far and how much will it cost to get there? Thanks for your time!

gnotinz - weklcome to this branch of the thorntree.Firstly, Bangkok does not have a single central point, it's more like 4 - 5 main areas (e.g Khao San Road (backpackersville and scam central); Siam Central (shopping paradise); upper Sukhumvit Road (adult entertainment and shopping); Silom (financial district and adult entertainment); and Chinatown)
Chatuchak market is a good day out - easiest way to get there is by skytrain (BTS) or metro (MRT).
Paltinum Mall is good for clothes shopping (Pratunam district) but I wouldn't stay there for a first timer. Sukhumvit would be my choice.
Food-wise - go to any shopping mall and either (or both) the lowest or upper levels will have excellent food court
serving a good variety of thai food.
Happy trravels!

I also wouldn't suggest staying near Platinum Mall. I would look for a place on Sukhumvit Road, close to a BTS (Skytrain) station such as Asok or Phrom Phong. Staying there will make it easy to get around to the other parts of the city.Try to take a trip along the river while you are in Bangkok. You can take the BTS to Saphan Taksin and then get the Chao Phraya Express Boat from the pier there to the temple area of Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, etc.
There are buses running from Ekamai bus station to Pattaya, but it takes around 2.5 hours each way, so you would use a whole day if you went there. I think you can easily fill 3 days in Bangkok itself.

I would also stay somewhere along Sukhumvit, if you only have 3 days its really not worth going elsewhere. Just explore the city. Include the grand palace, reclining Buddha, Khao San Rd, Shopping centes, Markets BTS to explore. Have a good sample of the extensive nightlife and restaurants and your 3 days will be quickly over. Enjoy.4
Hello.we wanted to go to museum, eat good food, go shopping, watch an elephant show,
- Vimanmek,Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall,Bangkok Museum.- Eat good food? Everywhere is good food , if you don't mind to try street food vendors like locals.
- Elephant show in Bangkok I don't think will have it here but near Bangkok there is Samphran elephant ground and zoo (http://www.elephantshow.com/eng/home.htm)
Is platinum mall really a good area?
- it's good area for shopping but not the best for stay.About Hotel near BTS or MRT is good area to stay,
- If you would like to stay around shopping and food places there is Siam to Sukhumvit area. but I don't know how much for your hotel budget,
And BTS to Mochit Station for Chatuchak market.

For night market you can walk around Siam square or BTS to Saphan taksin station and catch free shuttle boat to Asiatique for night shopping and dinner at the riverside.
Note that BTS will available till midnight only.

And we're planning on going to Pattaya for a day if possible. How far and how much will it cost to get there?
It's about 2 hours and $10 per person each way, but... are you sure?
If you're looking to get laid at a very reasonable price, it's an awesome choice. As a beach, meh. It's like Puerto Vallarta, maybe not quite as nice.

My girlfriend and I ..........And we're planning on going to Pattaya for a day if possibleIf you go, you may not still have a GF by the time you get back to Bkk, LOL!
How far and how much will it cost to get there?
Buses go from Ekamai and Morchit for 113 baht ( last time I went ). Quicker from Morchit as the Sukhumvit traffic holds you up for ages.
I see little point going for a day, as the beach is crap, and the town is also crap, unless you like hanging out in a shopping mall.

why wouldn't you stay by platinum mall?
Because that area is really only good for clothes shopping (Pratunam area) and IT (Pantip Plaza) but it's not close to public transport such as subway (MRT) or monorail/skytrain (BTS) which will make getting around a little more difficult (so taxi is the option here) and there's not much to see around there.
