Roadtrip North to South or South to North ?

Hi Guys,

We are planning to do a 20 days roadtrip in Feb. 2013.

I was wondering if it is better to drive from Auckland to Christchurch or from Christchurch to Auckland?

In other words, which dirrection is better:

Nord to South or South to North.

Any advice is greatly appriciated.

Thanx in advance

/Henrik

makes no difference regarding scenery. Or hills. :-)

it used to make a difference regarding car hire costs, with most people going north to south and the cars having to be brought back. Not sure if this is still the case, especially as many car hire companies now don't let cars cross the strait.

Sounds good.

I was just wondering why almost ALL tour guides, Driving directions etc are going from North to South.

I wonder why

Because the major international airport is in Auckland.

A bit of trivia. Use Apex for a relocation and they'll throw in the ferry for free.

I'd wholeheartedly suggest North to South. The South Island is significantly more scenic, and a great place to finish your trip.

In February, in the southern hemisphere, south to north is often better, as the weather will start to get cooler. Travelling south to north, you will have the best chance of warm weather everywhere.
I disagree with poster #5 - North Island is also beautiful, just different.

It's true still what #1 said vehicles having to be relocated back to the north so you may get a better deal going South to North. If you do arrive Chch, the Kaiapoi i-SITE is just 19km north of the international airport with free easy carparking, its signed posted from SH1 they can help with weather forecasts to help you plan were to go first, they have some free maps and can do bookings etc

It can sometimes be warmer in the South Island in February, Ozziegiraffe, so I'm not sure that really applies here. Certainly at other times of the year you'd take that into account though.

I'd say north to south so you can take the ferry from Wellington and have the fantastic sail through the Marlborough Sounds to Picton. Not the same in the opposite direction IMHO

As #5 says, the scenery is better in the South, so if you go North it will be a bit of a letdown. I'm taking my wife to NZ for the first time in Jan/Feb, and will definitely go to the North Island first for this reason.

Saw neverwinter's comment:

'.... especially as many car hire companies now don't let cars cross the strait'

Surely you don't have to hire a car for North Island and then another in South Island. Or do you?,

(Planning our first NZ trip in Jan/Feb 2013)

Look at the price, it might be cheaper for you to hire separate cars for each Island.

Also, flying between Islands might be cheaper than taking the ferry.
