I've held a Chinese drivers license for 11 years. But having said that, at the end of the day, they'd prefer foreigners didn't drive. If I was still in BJ, what with all the subways now, the traffic increase and overall lack of convenient (and affordable) parking, I'd rather not drive. If you live here long-term and reside in a 2nd or 3rd tier city, I can see it (bearing in the total cost of car ownership here is higher than back in the world)

We all drive down here in a third tier city. However I would highly reccomend #31 suggestion. Be well under 70 if you try for a license too. It is so much easier and cheaper to take taxis. If you can't do it any other way say Da Biao, use the meter. I have proved that. No need to prove things that are not sensible as yet.

Our plans further on are to get the drivers licence in Beijing, fly to Chengdu, rent the car with Hertz and drive independently and without any prebooking and any cocrete plans into the landscapes of Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai or Yunnan - depending on the political possibilities then (Tibetian territories) . All in Sep. 2013- so you will have to wait a bit for our report ; )
Anyone here who have held or hold a temporary licence ?

Be prepared to encounter significant obstacles that will turn your plans inside out. That is, you'd better work on a China trip 2013 "Plan B".

Driving from Sichuan to Yunnan you need to be very careful not to drive in areas that are closed. Be also careful as the Tibetans from some parts of Sichuan have a bad reputation of extracting money from tourists (Chinese tourists generally) by faking an accident. Happened to my girlfriend.

...as I wrote, we will be flexible due to the political situation then....

Political situation? What does it have to do with driving?

as mentioned by me before, and repeated by 35 and 36, it is always possible, that some regions could be closed for tourists (Northern Sichuan for example)...I would call this political

I am not holding my breath for any of this to come fruition, but god bless you if you pull it off, and anytime you are in Chicago, beer is on me.

"you will be executed."
Like an "on the spot fine"?

This is a most entertaining thread. It all sounds like too much hassle and bother to get a temp licence. Which is probably their aim. Anyone have any idea as to why the government doesn't want foreigners driving there?

Because you cannot read a map or the signs. Because their driving habits are different. Because you do not know the rules of the road (official and non-official ones). Because some of the rules make it difficult if you cannot speak the language (such as having to deal with the other driver in the case of an accident to settle the claim) and finally, like many other things, it has to do with reciprocity. Chinese cannot drive in my country with their Chinese driver's license so I cannot drive there. Chinese cannot get an international driver's license. Just like for visas. If your country makes it difficult for Chinese to visit your country, then China will make it difficult for you or not qualify you for some of their visa exemptions.
