where to go for a week from Singapore??

I am soon to be working in Singapore and then have a week from 1st Jan to travel somewhere before I head back to the UK. I dont want to go too far as have to head back to singapore to catch my flight home. Am happy to fly somewhere, particularly if it isnt too far and has a few places to see near by. I would like somewhere with some great culture, some temples possibly and local flavour and anywhere with a beach near by would be fantastic. Also, I could do a few places if they are relatively close. Thinking Penang in Malaysia or Langkawi ??

thanks

Penang would be GREAT! Only a 1hr30m flight frm SIN... Has one of asia's best foods... There are also lots of resorts and beaches on the island... about 5 day should be enough.. The last two days you could consider going to KL for a day and then travel from KL to LHR:)
Happle hols:)

Oh... Must your flight be from SIN? Then maybe you would want to visit KL or JB, not Langkawi or Penang... KL and JB both are food cities... and maybe you would like to visit Legoland Malaysia near JB? I suggest 4 days in KL and 3 in JB before heading back sin...
Or 1 wk in KL and then fly to SIN for your onwards SIN-LHR flight:)

P.S.; Local flavour, culture temples and beaches would be Penang though... KL has all but no beaches unless you travel to shah alam, 1hr away frm KL... JB has beaches and food but little temples, LOTS of mosques... Langkawi is famous for its resorts and seafood...

Langkawi will be nice although Gili Islands in Bali is a must, 1 week in paradise! Bali is also nice, suits your wants with temples, food, and beach ;) And it's only abour 3-4 flights from Singapore?

Agree with Penang..and with a week you could spend a few days there and a few in Langkawi as well.

Airasia flys direct from Singapore...short,easy and cheap trip.

Thanks for all your advice, I really appreciate it. I do definitely have to go back from Singapore as my flights are already booked by my company. I was wondering what the prices are like in Penang and also Bali? i.e accomodation and food etc. Especially as I'll be probably travelling solo. Thanks once again. I also have heard I have a friend in Ho chi Minh so was thinking of going there for the week. Thanks once again for the help :)

I didnt find Penang anything to shout about. But thats just probably me.
To me theres nothing special about Penang food, except the price compared to S'pore.
And Georgetown seems like certain parts of S'pore 15-20 years ago. Theres an old world sort of charm to it I suppose.

Prices in Penang and Bali are similar, but culturally they're worlds apart. Just that I enjoyed Bali so much more, coming from S'pore.

Agree that there isn't much difference in prices.

The flight will cost you substantially more to Bali, but when you are there food and accommodation prices are similar to Penang.

If you are interested in modern 'war' history' Phnom Penh is a good choice...for a few days.So too is the area round Ho Chi Minh.

All thses places have a lot to offer culturally...different types of culture though.
