One DayHey guys,
I'm traveling to Costa Rica for work, and I have one day left over (done w/ work on Friday, need to fly back on Sunday) to do something. Any recommendations as to what's fun in or around San Jose? I typically avoid larger cities when I travel in favor of smaller places, countryside, etc. but in this case I don't think it makes a ton of sense to go out of San Jose for just one day.
Any suggestions are hugely welcome.

there are a LOT of day trips possible from san jose, including coffee tours, a visit to poas or irazu volcano, rafting, horseback, hiking, to braulio carrillo national park for the tram through the rainforest, etc.
since you will be working and living in san jose, i would suggest you get out of town for your one day off. the real problem is: there's too much to choose from. you can rent a car and go on your own or go with an organized tour.

2If you don't want to get out of the city, and you like history and 'culture'...the Jade museum is excellent.
Lots of great local artworks, with a good historical description (in both English and Spanish)...not only jade, but ceramics, weapons, everyday objects etc. Very high quality pieces..probably the best of its kind in CA.
There is also a nice contemporary art museum,if you like that kind of thing.....

4If you are interested in pre-Columbian culture the Jade Museum in San Jose is excellent...probably the best of its kind in CA (and not only jade..loads of other stuff as well).

5Hello, There is the information about many one day tours from SJ http://costaricaspecialdeals.com/2012-06-22-18-42-44.html
I have heard about coffee tours, volcano tours, rafting, city tours. Costa Rica is too small it is a huge advantage , in one day you can discover a really beautiful place.

6One of the best things in CR to do is raft the Rio Pacuare. They pick up and drop off at all area hotels downtown, 7am to 5pm is a great way to enjoy the mountains, tropical atmosphere and a great time spending a day on the river over the continental divide and amongst indigenous indians on the river banks.
There are 3 in 1 tours from SJ, that are Poas Volcano, Coffee tour and La Paz Waterfalls, all very nice.
Or just take in SJ, hit the centro mercado a very busy place on a Saturday, great food there, and lots of nice places to walk and enjoy on the Avinda Central, a pedestrian mall...
No need to stay in Alajuela, thats boring and fin for transit/flights, but take in the city. Friday and Sat night is a good time, stay on Avidnda Central area like the Gran Hotel, Presidente, Balmoral, or around in barrio Amon like Kaps Place, Dunn Inn or Hemingway House. Good nightlife is around El Peublo area on weekends, younger and dancing/pool halls and bars, best to always taxi everyhwere at in San Jose. Just carry money for the night, copy of passport and maybe a CC for back up...leave all valuable in room.
Sat night you could maybe also catch a performance at the Salazar Theatro next to the Gran Hotel, or see whats going on at the Cultural Center around bend near Parque Morozan/Barrio Amon.
For a more refined and well healed option, consider staying in Escazu area above SJ, though getting about is best arranged with the hotel.
