Winnipeg to Churchill flights----ouch, 1200$ round trip flight

Hello All

I am very interested in seeing the Northern Lights, Beluga Whales and maybe a Polar Bear in Churchill in August of 2013

The flight to Churchill from Winnipeg however is pretty steeply priced.

I am aware of the train between the two cities, but this takes over a day.

Any other suggestions for a cheaper flight to Churchill?

thanks

I have never been able to find cheap flights on this route. I have travelled to Churchill a few times from Winnipeg and always enjoyed the train. A good idea is to get a sleeper room. You get a few hours sleep whenever you feel like it.

I just came back from a week in Churchill. I looked at every which way to get there and I found the drive/train option works the best.

We flew into Winnipeg and rented a car. From there we drove to Thompson. We left the car at Thompson and got the over night train to Churchill. The train is very comfortable and we only had seats. The return cost was $156. If you didn't want to rent a car you can get the greyhound. It does take a lot longer than a flight but its a lot cheaper!

If you need any info on Churchill let me know.

Fun place with great people! I hear the whales are crazy cool!

Niraj;

August will place you in Churchill to see the tail end of the Beluga season (pun intended), but you'd be months early for the Polar bears.

Via Rail's site was down when I tried to check, but you might consider flying up to Thompson (about half-way; CD $650 return), and then railing or bussing the rest of the way up to Churchill? But I won't lie to you: the bus could be a rough and interesting ride, and not just because of the roads!

I'm not aware that there is a bus to Churchill. Is this something new?

There are no roads leading to Churchill. You can only go by rail from Thompson.

There is only a bus from Winnipeg to Thompson. From Thompson its by air or train only.

Speaking to the locals its not uncommon to see bears in the summer. They are just not everywhere like they are before the ice melts.

Oops. I stand corrected. The railway it is then!

A non-existent bus route on a non-existent road up to Churchill would be interesting!

Thanks for the correction guys.

Does anyone know what the drive like from Winnipeg, MT to Thompson, MT at the end of October / early November?

Would we need a 4w drive or chains? Google maps says it's a 8 hour drive, is this true, is it possible to do it in a day?
