ok, still confused by various regulations in different states but i suppose that what i need to do is:buy a car in NSW, providing it is checked professionally and is roadworthy
make sure it is registered for a long time so my son does not have to hassle with it
I suppose that achieving this would mean investing money, however if the car is checked professionally is there a reason not to renew registration even if say 4-5 month are left? is that possible?

If the car is currently registered then the transfer of ownership also includes the current registration, however you need to go to an RTA to notify them of transfer (and pay stamp duty) - fairly easy process.What is not transferred is any Insurance - need to organise that yourself including Green Slip

An interesting point that nobody has mentioned - in order to dispose of (sell) a vehicle in NSW, both the seller and the buyer must hold a NSW drivers licence. Yet - backpackers buy cars straight off the plane.... I suspect the NSW licence as a buyer is probably flexible.... any O/S backpackers want to tell us how it's done???

You do not need to purchase another green slip, that goes with the car when it is sold. You cannot have a car registered ( in NSW anyway) without a green slip. When you re-register a car you need to pay 3 separate things - pink slip (mechanical inspection), green slip (compulsory 3rd party injury insurance) and the registration to the RTA. I suggest you purchase a car which has longer than 6 months rego to you don't have to worry about any of this.The way I suspect backpackers get way with this is by not transferring the registration. If you purchase a car the seller completes a notice of disposal for the RTA. This will have your details on it so if you go through a speed camera or something in the car the seller does not receive the ticket. If you don't transfer the registration with the RTA, generally nothing will happen until you have to re-register the car. Then you will need to pay the " late transfer fee" which is a couple of hundred dollars extra. If you're just scrapping the car at the end, and not reselling it then you do not have to re register.
I'm not suggesting this is a good idea, or that you will get away with it, I'm just thinking that this is what they may be doing to get around the licence issue.

yes this is getting more complicated. as mentioned above RTA site states quite clearly thatBoth the seller and buyer must have a NSW licence or Customer number to lodge a notice of disposal.
this to me can only be interpreted as my son will not be able to even buy a car, maybe only from a dealer?? really difficult to see a way out of all this

I work in a town with lots of back packers. They buy their cars in Sydney. Get ripped off as I said previously, then come into our business to have their cars repaired only to discover the repairs are often more than the car is worth.
I occasionally get to see the rego papers.
Last week, a French couple came in with their exploder, I mean explorer and wanted us to fix their over heating problem. The car had been registered in the name of one of them while they were in Young picking cherries. The address on the registration was the name of the farm where they were working at the time.

P2 licence holders must:
- Have P plates (green P on a white background) displayed conspicuously at the front and rear exterior of the car when driving. The letter P on the plate must not be hidden. If towing a trailer, a P plate must be on the back of the trailer.
- Not exceed zero blood alcohol concentration (this means you cannot drink before driving). It is illegal to drive under the influence of drugs.
- Observe a maximum speed limit of 100 km/h.
- Not supervise a learner driver.
- Only carry the number of passengers that can be properly seated in seats and restrained by approved seat belts or child restraints.
- Only drive vehicles that have a seat belt fitted to the driver's position and you must wear the seat belt.
- Not drive certain prohibited vehicles.

lol... this thread reads like a NSW licencing document..and god help you if you have to walk in to an RTA office to do your biz... save a few hours !!!I've sold cars "used car salesman" in NSW and QLD..
QLD is much easier but, with NSW being so ANAL about everything, you're more likely to buy a better car in NSW..
if you know what you're doing then head to QLD... beautiful one day,,,

^ I agreeAs one who got a licence in Queensland, where you didn't have to wear p plates, when 17, and then moved back to vic, where you do have to wear p plates and can't even get a licence to 18 anyhow, I concur that a foriegner won't have to fully abide by local drivers licence rules.
Btw , as a 19 year old traveling about and staying in backpackers I'd have hated having me parents with me, just saying

In Queensland, I could go and steal a car, write a receipt (bit of paper will do) with the rego number, engine and chassis numbers, with a dated signature (any signature)... I can then walk into a Queensland Transport Department Office, fill in a few forms, hand them all over to the lady, pay the taxes, and the car now belongs to me. Legally.want your car back? Sue me!
Of course not too many crooks are going to go and steal a car then go and give the transport department all his info, is he. No!.
But, it could be done!
Too Easy.. Queensland was a duck shoot..!!!..lol
