What do you think of my 3 week itinerary?
Hi there,I'm going to SE Asia for 3 weeks over the Xmas & New Year. I fly into HCMC & depart from Chiang Mai. Other than that I have no restrictions so looking for a varied trip (i.e. not too many temples) & do not want to be constantly travelling. Here's my draft itinerary, what do you think? Worth sacrificing Chiang Mai for Luang Prabang? Thanks!
Sandy

How are you going from Siem Reap to Vang Vieng? Fastest if you fly to Vientiane then take a bus/van to V V. Otherwise it's a very long road journey. Vang Vieng to Huay Xai takes around 17-20 hours by public bus and it makes sense to stop at least for a day in Luang Prabang, or a few days and then forget Chiang Mai. Also depends on how/where you're flying home. Book the GibbonX thing well in advance.2
Hi Captain,I was planning on flying to Vientiane then bus to Vang Vieng.
For Huay Xai (Gibbon Exp), it's tricky. Either bus to Luang Prabang then boat or speed boat. Alternatively, skip Luang Prabang altogether and fly from Vientiane instead.
Cheers,
Sandy

You know all the bars along the river in VV have now gone? Gibbon Ex. very expensive and don't expect to see any gibbons. I would cut 1 day off HCMC and Siem Reap if you don't like too many temples.4
Hmmm, I'd heard the authorities were always threatening to close down Vang Vieng but searching ThornTree, it looks like they've finally done it!
