Generally yes, but not always. In fact some airlines quote prices for two one-way tickets when buying round trips (i.e. SouthWest).

Some of the really low special fares, especially from carriers other than Southwest will be cheaper as a round trip. Southwest will charge whatever a specific flight is listed at and it may be different in each direction depending on the time you leave.

In my experience, no. Peak flights cost more (obviously) and emptier planes cost less.

It used to be that two one way tickets were much more expensive than a round trip, but that has been changing. It will really depend on the exact route, airline and flight. Get on a general flight booking site and do some experimentation.
