April in the Caribbean - home base recommendations

Hi folks,

I'm hoping that someone might have a gem of a recommendation for me. I only have a week in early April (after Easter/Semana Santa week) to get away from the cold of a Northern Canadian winter and am looking for an island/place to enjoy for the week. I have traveled extensively throughout Central America and South America and bits of the Caribbean and am looking for a new place that has good weather and beaches but something else to explore in terms of nature/culture/food/activities. I am in my early 30s and would be going with my sister so something that is more apt for the single traveler (versus the honeymooners) and in the low-medium range budget would be best. I already know Cuba, DR and Belize. Am traveling from afar so something that has fairly direct flights from Canada is also preferred. We love snorkeling, hiking, sailing, boating, exploring historical and cultural sites. Ideas?

Sub-note: I have lived in Honduras, Costa Rica, Cuba and Colombia. I have traveled throughout Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

Utila Honduras it's an island with crystal white beaches, where you can snorkel out to the reef, also has 13 Dive Tribes. I recommend Cross Creek Dive Center for diving, they can also advise you on a place to stay, where to eat.You can also go Hiking in the Jungle, the island is only a mile wide by a mile long, but it does not have direct access to Canada you would have to fly in to Cebu and then take the ferry over to it. Check it out on the Internet. Angel and Jo and the rest of the staff at Cross Creek would be happy to answer any questions you might have

Thanks for the Utila recommendation. As I previously lived in Honduras, I am very familiar with the great things it offers. Unfortunately due to problems with my ears, diving is off of the table for me :( - also looking for something with a bit easier access as I would have to fly non-direct into San Pedro and then onwards to La Ceiba before getting on a ferry! Worth it if you have the time but I unfortunately won't have as much.

Anyone else know fun places in the Caribbean that meet what I am looking for in my above post? Thanks!

St Maarten has/had non stop flights to Toronto (on Westjet) , as well as more options with just one stop in Miami. or New York. The island has both the Dutch and French side,so two cultures and foods to explore. It also has an abundance of great beaches, boating options, and a thriving nightlife scene good for singles. Not as much lush nature or historical/cultural sites to explore, but if you get bored, there are several islands a boat ride away, for day trips or overnight. They include St Barts, Saba (great for a hike to the top of the island) and Anguila.

I believe Air Canada also has direct flights to Jamaica
