Myanmar mid-year

Hi all.

We are thinking about going to Myanmar and realize that December to March are the best months. However, it looks as though our only chance this year will be late June to mid July. I know that this is the wet season but I would like to hear from any travelers who have been during this time of the year and how tolerable or otherwise the weather was.

Thanks for the advice.

I was there a few years ago in July. It is hot and very muggy. It does not rain 24/7 but when it rains it really rains. I went from the front gate of the American Embassy to a waiting taxi, maybe 30 meters, in a down-pour and was wet to the skin by the time I sat down in the taxi. It was so humid that all the paper documents in my wallet molded. YUCK! Do not waste your time with an umbrella. That said, the rain was warm, and it did not cause any lasting effects. A good poncho would be worth packing as would a tight rain hat like a sou'wester with a long back bream to keep water from running down your neck.

I think a small fold up travel umbrella is much better than a jacket or poncho as you don't get hot under it. The umbrella also provides some protection to a small pack and if you are caught in the sun gives some protection there too. Mind you, a poncho is good if your are in some open transport or it is windy.

ီ Both December and march are better to visit in Myanmar. April is hot.

I was there for 10 days in early July this year and rain wasn't much of a problem -- rainfall levels vary greatly around the country. There was rain every day that we were in Yangon, but it didn't go on all day -- it seems that's typical of anywhere near the coast. Inland it's much drier, though -- there was a very brief and light rain shower in Bagan, but otherwise we didn't see any rain. Definitely not something to deter a trip, in my opinion, unless you have your heart really set on visiting areas near the coast.
