Anyone doing the Cancun to Belize Road Trip for Xmas & NYE

Hi All,

Just new to this site so finding my way around. Myself and two friends are doing a road trip from Cancun to Belize from 20th Dec for 3 weeks and was wondering if anyone else was doing a similar trip to meet for a beer/s.

I have done a bit of research and this is our proposed route:

Puerto Morelos - Playa del CarmenTulum (visit Coba & Valladolid ruins) - Costa Maya – Xcalak - Chetumal - Ambergris Caye - Caye Caulker - Belize City - San Ignacio - maybe Tikal??

Have we missed anything out that you could recommend? Where is best place or Xmas and New Year? We were thinking of doing the Raggamuffin 3 day Sailing Trip from Caye Caulker, has anyone else done this?

Sorry lots of questions, any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

Darren

From an earlier thread:

" Beginning the week before Christmas families from the highlands begin to head to their favorite beach. By the week after Christmas and lasting through 3 Kings Day (January 6), the trickle of families becomes a flood. Other than the Easter holiday period, it is the major national tourism holiday period when accommodation becomes limited and prices increase. Do not expect to simply show up in any of the beach communities and easily find budget accommodation ! "

There are numerous other posts re: this period at any beach in Mexico. You could use the advanced Search function at the top right of the page for more threads.

Bien viaje

Hi Disco Y miquelito - took a similar kind of trip some years ago.- the mexican part with Playa del Carmen ( would prefer Akumal better snorkling ) Tulum (visit Coba & Valladolid ruins) hammack area with party on the beach.

Entering Berlize it get`s a bit more primitiv with transport and Berlize city really sucks - Placencia is a great place and better then caulker. Berlize is a bit of a experience Jamaica petit But if you really wanna see the best beaches then go the islands of Roatan utilla in honduras.
Tikal is the best maya place ever and finca ixobel on the way there was best stop.
The mexican area is the best party area for new year thing. Merida is also a trip worth taking

Thanks for your quick response guys, I will use the advanced search to read other threads.

We prefer less touristy places so I think we will probably stay in Akumal & Tulum rather than Playa del Carmen. I will have a look at Placendia & the Islands of Roatan Utilla as this wasn't part of our route - not sure if we would have enough time to go into Honduras??

We will probably track back to the PDC area for NYE as I've seen a few good nights advertised which are set along the beaches

I'd skip Chetumal (although the Mayan museum there is very nice) and stay in nearby Lake Bacalar instead.

Just looked at Lake Bacalar & that's a great shout, we will definitely check that out!!!

Some great advice here, are we missing anything else out that has not been mentioned?

Well besides the fort at Bacalar, there are a few nice ruins not too far away if you have time, on Hwy186. We visited Kohunlich, right off the road and not a long drive, were the only ones there at 9am, there are some cool Mayan masks. Eat at the restaurant just south of town at the cenote, not sure of the name, maybe Cenote Azul?

Great road trip. Xcalak is a long way from the main highway and the road can be rough. There are some nice beaches and surf south of Mahajual if you can overlook the garbage.
Bacalar is a great little town. Stay at Casita Carolina's. Lovely spot right on the Laguna but email ahead to book.
The ceviche at Cenote Azul is reccommended. Kohunlich is also worth visiting as is nearby Dzbanche! Very nice less visited Mayan ruins.
You can leave Bacalar in the morning to take a half hour bus trip into Chetumal to meet the 3pm (approx) boat to the Caye's. Enjoy!!

Thanks for the advice and recommendations.

Where do you think we should stay for Xmas & NYE? For Xmas we were thinking Caye Caulker but not sure if this will be really quiet & deserted, has anyone stayed here over Xmas? We want to chill during the day then party at night!

Any advice where to stay on CC & do we need to book in advance?

Thanks

We will be doing almost the same things as you guys. We are landing in Cancun on December 18th and leaving from Belize City on January 8th.

We are planning on staying in Tulum on December 19th,20th et 21th for the end of the world events.

We will probably go to Tikal before Caye Caulker in order to spend New Year's Eve there (Caye Caulker) rather than Christmas.

See me an private message, we could try to meet up there or something. We are three guys, looking for the same type of trip I guess :)
