The quickest why to get from Bali to Lombok is by plane. U arrive in Praya Lombok. The tourist attraction are in the South of Lombok for surfing, the North of Lombok for hiking, and Nort West of Lombok for The Gili Islands. The best surfing will be in the South of Lombok, beginners Kuta Lombok, advanced Gerupuk, Dessert Point, Eka..... For partying Sengiggi or Gili Islands. The island with the most bars is Gili Trawangan, but that doesnt mean that u cant party on the other islands.
From Lombok u can take a local boat from the harbor of Lombok, Bangsal, to the Gili Islands. Reject all the advises in Bangsal buy a ticket and dont listen to all the things what people are telling u. There are shops on the Gilis, u dont have to buy a return ticket straight away, etc.....
Trekking is populair, the rinjani trekking, 3 night, is beautiful and a must if u visit Lombok. Be aware u are in the raining season, so maybe the trekking is closed for safety reasons.

Although personally I would not take the fast boats from Bali to Lombok - if you want to fit in the Gilis that would make the most sense time wise. Direct to Gilis for a few days then over to the mainland and finish up in Kuta (30 minutes from the airport) before flying out to KL.Re surf - beginners actually go out at Gerupuk for surf lessons. Although I have heard of people surfing Kuta from time to time, in 15 years I have never seen anyone doing it. Most of the surf shops offering lessons do so out of Gerupuk I am sure you could also arrange lessons out of the new bungalows located at Are Guling another surf spot West of Kuta. You can also surf Seger and Tanung Aan, East of Kuta and further West from Are Guling are Mawi and Serangan. Even if you dont surf or plan to take lessons the beaches along the south coast are beautiful check out the photos in the link in my signature to see what you can expect.

If you want real trekking, Rinjani is a must. It's in the north, about as far from the surfing in Kuta/Gerupuk as you can go, but Lombok's not so big, and you see some awesome scenery along the way.For the fit and confident, the three day/two night trek is the go, but trekking companies can tailor their treks to your needs. You can book at any one of the numerous booking offices in the tourist areas.
All my friends who have done the Rinjani trek have raved about it, particularly the early-morning climb to the rim for the sunrise. But they have all come back exhausted - it's hard going.
Note that it is wet season, so you may get a bit of cloud obscuring the views, slippery trails and, of course, rain.

We are due to go to Lombok in a couple of months so looking at those fotos Mrs Mimpimanis linked to was amazing ! It looks wonderful and I can't wait to get there. Just what I needed on a cold November afternoon...thanks for sharing those, really whet my appetite6
Take the fast boat to the Gili Islands if you want some beach time and to party. The rest of Lombok is more chilled but the Gilis are one of the world's best destinations for sun and fun.
