Another possibility for a bit of comfort on that first night in AKL is to use www.wotif.co.nz and either go for their "Mystery hotel" or look out for a bargain at the Copthorne Harbour - great location & great harbour views. It is a little dated so often offers good bargains around the $100 -$120 mark (with buffet breakfast included.).

WOW.
Thank you so much to everyone still putting stuff on here for me.
Lisa, thank you for the campsite information, that was very helpful, much more detail than I had.
I have actually taken a closer look at the DoC sites and you are quite right, for the sort of thing we will be doing I can't see we will want to camp on one without at least basic toilet facilities. We have decided on a simple campervan, small enough to make driving on narrow roads easier. We'll decide about buying a small tent as well when we see how comfortable/uncomfortable sleeping inside the van is. I took a look at Warehouse on-line and there seemed to be some very good offers on cheap summer tents.
I could quite fancy a mystery night in Auckland, always up for a surprise.
Am sorry to see that the Milford Road is closed, it was a must-do. Is this usual for this time of year? How unpredictable is it? We were hoping to go there in early February.
Thanks
Carolyn

you can track the status of the road on http://www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/milfordroad/RoadStatus.do

no predictions but they will want to get it open as soon as possible, both for the tourists and for the small population of Milford Sound.
