Valencia vs MalagaHello All,
I'm planning a trip to Spain and have already chosen a number of places to visit. I'm now trying to decide between a stop in Valencia or Malaga. Both are convenient in my itinerary and I would have 3 days to spend in whichever city I choose.
I'm wondering if you could please provide your opinion - which would you recommend?
As for what I'm looking for in a destination, I am a female in my mid 20s traveling solo by train. Somewhat of a budget trip (staying in hostels). The trip will be in May 2013. I'm looking for a place with historical sites/museums, lively nightlife, a beach option, friendly people and great food. I know both Valencia and Malaga have beaches and both are said to have energetic nightlife. What's harder to research is "vibe" - which did you like better?
Obviously everyone goes for different things. I would just appreciate any opinions or advice.
Big thanks to anyone who replies! :)

4Malaga - but both cities have what you want. I just spend most of my time in Andalucia because of the 'feel', 'vibe' or call it what you will.
I cannot relate to some of your criteria because of age and not staying in a hostel for thirty odd years. (You may also find hostAls and pensions and other descriptions the equal or less than hostEls for your budget.)
I will be pleasantly surprised if this does not turn into a simple poll.

52-1 to Malaga
I fear you guys are rating the beach aspect higher than the other ones that the OP mentioned ;-)

6To clarify - my vote is very little connected to Malaga city's beaches and comparison as I spend no time on them, and not why I spend two to four days in Malaga every year. I am pleased with the some of the bars and eateries, for value, alongside the paseos fronting the beaches east and west of the city.

8To clarify for me Malaga wins in all departments, never really enjoyed Valencia but would recommend Malaga to anyone.

14I suppose you know that sea water will be rather cold at both places, at least in the first half of May.
If you like things like http://www.cac.es/ (designed by Calatrava) you may prefer Valencia.
May be you would get better answers if you would tell us your whole itinerary through Spain. As Malaga "is convenient in your itinerary", you will probably stay at Sevilla and Granada too; from there, it's a long journey up to Valencia.
