Yes it's a good idea to go.The areas of Nairobi effected by violence are limited and not the areas you need to be in prior to your trip.
Good luck.

so far bus and matatu stations in the city centre have been targeted by attacks - if you don´t use public transport and rather stick to cab (plus there is not really so much to see in the city centre should your hotel be a bit more in the suburbs) you can easily avoid that kind of risk (and there have been just a few singular cases so far). The closer the elections get, the more violence is possible - but if it´s in any way like the last time, the violence will take place mostly in the slums. However, if there are public rallies in places like Uhuru park, make sure not to be in the surrounding at that time just in case.
Otherwise, security alerts in Nairobi have been up for over a year. You will notice that many hotels and malls have seurity staff or metal detectors checking bags. There have also been rumors for ages that a mall like village market or one of the upmarketed hotels where expats, tourists and diplomats mingle, might be targeted by terrorists from al shabaab. So far, nothing has happened. When you leave for your safari from Nairobi, it is probably a case of flying in, staying a night, going on safari? I can´t see how you should get in danger in such a short time

Yes, basically we are flyin in to the city, staying one night then gone for 4 days on the safari, and upon our return to the city we fly out right away. So were only staying in the city one night. Is there any concerns of violence in the surrounding areas outside the city? Like the areas where the safari may be taking us?
Thanks so much.

Where are you going on safari - Masai Mara, Tsavo, Rift lakes? Whatever it is, I do not see a problem in any of these areas judging from the cases of violence so far. It did not seem to have the ethnic root it had in 2007/2008, when the roads to the Rift Valley were not safe. Don´t worry about the reports, Kenya is a wonderful country and I hope you have a great time!
