You must mean that the microbuses are very crowded. Welcome to the third world. They'll tie your luggage to the roof. Just try not to be sitting next to someone who smells really bad. For Mindo, unless you want to walk or you have a few freinds who would like to share a taxi, the microbuses are the way to go.3
The public buses are fine. You just have to guard your luggage carefully, and keep anything of value on your person. Don't put anything on the floor under your seat; you can put your bag in a typical grain bag and have it stashed in the compartment under the bus; that will keep it clean, plus make it less of an interesting target.7
Lots of people have travelled there by bus and had no problems. The trouble is some posters like to be scaremongers.Think of all the people who have done it by bus and had no problems so they don't bother posting about it or even reading any posts on this forum. I know lots of people who don't bother with this forum and have had no problems at all. Those who have had problems do post about them to warn others I suppose.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I tend to get motion sickness easily even with drugs. Some travelers reported that the busses to Mindo drive at high speeds and that the roads are very curvy. Is that generally the case? I could be a sick pup if that is true. The guide book is unclear which busses will take me into the town center of Mindo. Some busses stop at the "Y"??? Are there taxis into town from the "Y"?

So now you finally get to the point of the "horror stories." This would have been useful information in your OP. The drivers do tend to drive fast and crazy. Sit as close to the front as you can to minimize the swaying effect.Go to the Ofelia terminal in Quito; the Flor del Valle buses will take you directly into Mindo.
