Nov 2012 issue of the National Geographic

Front page on the current Nov 2012 issue of the National Geographic is Cuba ….on the edge of change. I get it at work but if I had to pay for it I probable wouldn’t buy it as there was nothing new we haven’t read on the TT.

National Geographic brings interesting and spectacular stuff from the middle of the field, accompanied by sometimes good photography. Their website offers interesting and graphic stuff about human migration, for those who are interested.

To do real interesting reports and open up Cuba mentally to the world around I guess one needs get into Cuban daily life and record by statistical tools and distribution people’s perception on economics, health, education, their constraints, the power structure within the extended and nuclear family and the districts, the impacts of family abroad etc. But these are projects far too controversial.

Dear Enram,

In my opinion none of the issues you raised are controversial in the slightest. I can't imagine why you would think they are.

That was my only point.

Cheers,
Terry

"You tell me another place where a kid can grow up so safe, get his vaccinations, get his education, not be involved in gangs or drugs."

Not cuba ! Havana supposedly has a uprise in youth gangs. Gangs that has gone as far as killing rival members who enter their turfs....

Rickie, I agree. Even the photos we get links to here on TT, like those of Bob Michaels and others, are more interesting than the ones in this issue of NG.

Not sure what you're implying Sayeh, but Latin America has some of the most sophisticated gang culture on the planet.

Well, LA functions as a training facility for gangs from Mexico to El Salvador. It has always been my impression that Cuban kids, lacking easy access to El Norte, are vastly underdeveloped in terms of gang formation and the skills required for serious criminal activities. Not to say those elements are entirely absent from La Isla; total purity is hard to find in the real world. But well, let's just say that by comparison not very many Cubans youth are involved in gangs, and those that are would probably be considered hopelessly amateur by their counterparts in LA, Miami, Guatemala City, Tegulchiagalpa, San Salvador, etc.

Yes #12, i believe that this is just kids that have been led on the wrong path. I don't think they deal with any kind of organized crime. Just "protecting" their turf and (trying) to show superiority over the others. Which could have been cool if they had sorted it out with baseball or something and not by beating eachother up or in the worst cases killing..

So yeah, they are probably a joke compared the real gangs arounds the world.
