The THIRD Most Attended Dive School Area in the World?Given all the informal research I've done so far, if I am not mistaken, I think most people would probably agree that the Koh Tao and Utila/Roatan areas are respectively the highest and second-highest proportion of dive schools (and correspondingly total dive students per year) in the world. This then makes me wonder, where in the world is the 3rd most?
BTW, I have no specific reason and/or agenda for asking this question, I'm just curious. :-)

2Phuket is not even close, the number of schools there has dropped significantly over the past few years
I would go with Cairns as a guess?

3"Phuket is not even close, the number of schools there has dropped significantly over the past few years"
Some have disappeared, but quite a few new ones have popped up as well. All in all I would guess that over the past 4-5 years the number has not changed very much.
But the number of divecourses on Phuket can not be compared to for example Koh Tao. On Phuket for DC's the main source of income are courses, on Phuket the main source of income are trips for certified divers.
I must say though that in the op 'proportion of diveschools' does not make very much sense to me if there is no comparison, and as can be seen from this post 'corresponding number of dive students' is not necessarily related to the number of diveschools/divecenters.

4Yeah...sharm or Dahab in egypt for sure.....given the size of the operations there, i'd say that eygpt for numbers probably outdoes utilaa/roatan..... Was in Utila in 94 and it was starting to take off, (already no fish) but places like Sinai Divers and Red Sea College in Sharm had been pushing out students since late 80's...

6Agree about Cairns (my first ever dive many years ago), but surely PADI and SSI have some statistics.

7As above...the difference between number of dive centers and number of certs issued is vast.
Koh Tao is focused on schools , rather than fun diving. Cairns is also. Sharm is certainly a huge dive region - but focused more on certified (in comparison) divers.
I read - a few years back that one of the areas in Florida also does huge numbers of certs.
I would also consider Cancun/Cozumel to have very large numbers of certification....but I believe they do a great deal less since the hurricane a few years back.
