Last minute internal flightsHi folks,
Me and my compadre are heading to Ethiopia in December, a quick tour for a week so we are planning on flying around most of it.
I understand it's far cheaper to book a flight in the country when there, than outside online.
With this in mind, is it relatively easy, for example which we are doing, to arrive in addis at 2 am, and then the same morning, book and board a flog around 7am to Bihar dar?
We are planning on doing this the whole trip, arrive, hang about a short bit, then rock up at the airport, book a plane and jump (like a bus!).
Any hints and tips appreciated.

1I understand that as we (he and I el compadré) are flying to Ethiopia with Ethiopian Airlines, we will be entitled to a big discount on internal flights (50% off?) seems difficult to find this info online. Can anyone tell us whether a) it's safer to book internal flights in advance, online, on the phone or somewhere else in London, or b) it's best to wait until we get there and book all our flights at once in a bundle or c) wait until we get there and buy the flight tickets day-to-day as we go around? Can anyone also tell us how reliable the flights are? I've heard of morning flights taking off an hour early and on other occasions not taking off at all for that day!
As we're only going for a week, but still intend to get around the historic route, we have compiled quite an ambitious itinerary! It really depends on the flights. Below is our plan, anyone that can offer us any advice on this would be very much appreciated. We have done what research we can, online and in guide books. Would also really appreciate advice on the hotels we have below, do we need to try and book in advance? Are they good (budget) choices? And money?! Do we need to use an ATM at the airport to withdraw all money for the week?

2there has been some debate about whether you can get a plane ticket the same morning of the flight, I think most of the time the forum agreed it is better to spend a day in Addis. But you guys are really on short schedule.
Summerland in BD is not budget, as far as I can tell, it is about 40 -50 dollars for a twin I think.
Mountain view in Lalibela is 70 dollars for a twin I think
Don't know lodge balderas in Gondar nor ark or Yeha in Axum.
it depends on your dates, early to mid december, it should not be a problem to find places to stay in all these places
January is a terrible, as all the groups schedule around Ethiopian Xmas and Epiphany.
there was a post recently by addisadvisor2 about a travel agent in Addis who for a small fee will book local flights for you at a local price
coming in on ethiopian no longer gives you discount

3If we had to pay the full price for all the flights, the price it quotes on the website, then we won't be able to afford it. So I guess maybe we will only make it as far as Gondar on busses. Will be a real shame to not make it to Axum.
RE hotels, 30-60US$ for a twin room is OK. We are only there a week and we (may) have a lot of travelling to do.
We are going to be in Ethiopia 16-23 December. So I guess it will be busy in the lead-up to Christmas?
Thanks for your reply.

5Thank you folks.
Lizad, you know of this travel agent you speak of?
Also, a rough ideas on internal flights costs roughly would be good if anyone has gone recent. The new Brady guide suggests 40 dollar addis to Bihar.

8I think I've been through most posts now and can't find anyone recommending a trusty agent to book us flights. I am also unsure how I can pay the agent for the flights as we won't be in Addis until 7 days later.
Anyone who could help out would be much appreciated.
We are struggling a bit because we land at Addis airport around 1.30am and want to be on the morning flight from Addis to Bahir Dar. If there was a way of us going somewhere to buy tickets between 1.30am and 7am then we would do that but I don't expect there is. Going soon!

9I read on another forum maybe tripadvisor or virtual tourist that blue sky ethiopia can do it. I mailed them for a flight from Addis to Dire dawa. They replied next day that they could do it and would charge me $10 admin fee. So the price is $60 Plus $10 admin. Pretty good i reckon. I will send them payment tomorow via western union so hope it all pans out ok. Their website is http://www.blueskyethiopia.com/
Hope this helps.

11Hi, I emailed blueskyethiopia.com and they replied pretty quickly, they've offered to book our flights for $58 plus $10 fee, that's one way Addis > Bahar Dar, so I think I'll go ahead.
Thanks again and I hope that anyone needing this info can find this thread.
