At the moment I'm thinking about travelling around SE Asia for a few months. But I'm not sure. I'd like to hear what you would do with the money.
If you were in my position where would you go?
Without knowing anything about your interests, where you have been before, what you like and dislike etc etc.
SE Asia is an obvious option..its near, easy to get to,cheap and has loads to see and do.
Then...travel around Oz? NZ? Pacific Islands?...the possibilities are endless.
Personally, I want the money to last as long as possible whilst still being able to have a good time. I'd like to see something that not a lot of people have seen, get off the beaten path for a bit. That's what's putting me off SE Asia, it's become quite touristy in recent years, so I've heard.
My first 2 months so far:
Fly to Singapore stay for 9 days, explore for a bit and maybe off to Kuala Lumpur for a few days.
Fly to Krabi via Singapore and head off to Railay for 2-4weeks to climb and explore. (this flight path seems to be the cheapest from my research, ~$600-800NZD)
Then I'll head to Ko Tao and other islands to go diving and snorkelling
Then work my way north to Bangkok and eventually Chiang Mai
The plan seems to break down alittle from there onwards because I can't decide wether to go to Cambodia or Laos or just go with the flow. I will be living very cheaply in hostels and do mostly free activities (climbing/trekking/nature sight seeing/work on my photography) and hopefully my money will last me an entire year but probably 6-8months is more realistic.
I'll be travelling solo so if you're gonna do a similar trip give me a PM and maybe we could meet up along the way.
Therefore I would choose destinations which would be too expensive to just visiti them for 3 weeks holiday.
My favourites would be:
Oh sorry I didn't make it clear. 800NZD total for the flights from NZ to Kraki via SIN. SIN to Kraki is like 89NZD.
I think you're right, and I think I need more money.
Having given it some thought I think I'd like to visit Vietnam, Myanmar, Iran (around the Persian Gulf), Israel, Morocco, then work my way through Europe back to London (maybe Spain, France, Germany, then Amsterdam to London).
It's quite an ambitious trip and there are a lot of blanks to fill in.
How do I even begin to plan and budget for a trip like this?
Book a flight to your first destination.(Vietnam?)
Make sure you have a visa if you need one,ATM cards,a valid passport and some clothes etc.
Go there and see how you like it.When you are bored move somewhere else...

What to do with $10k?
I'm a UK Citizen currently in Australia on a 12 month working holiday visa. I've managed to save up $10k AUD ($10,400 USD/£6,500 GBP).At the moment I'm thinking about travelling around SE Asia for a few months. But I'm not sure. I'd like to hear what you would do with the money.

I just want to know what you would do, regardless of what anyone else would think.Personally, I want the money to last as long as possible whilst still being able to have a good time. Yes SE Asia is a popular backpacker destination but as Lucapal says there are places in each country that would less touristy....what are your main interests?. Myanmar (Burma) is relatively (I believe) untouched by backpackers so maybe that might be an option. I would also not rule out a whole region because they are popular destinations....some of the most visited places are worth seeing like Ankor Wat in Cambodia or Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. If I was in your situation I would buy a cheap one way ticket to Bangkok....plenty of budget airlines like Jetstar then travel around taking in Thailand, Myanmar, Lao, Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia....on your budget you should easily get 5 months travel done......though not clear if a flight home to UK is coming out of your proposed budget too. though if I wanted to have an extended travel time I would just go to India/Nepal for 7 months on that budget.6
I would spend the winter months in Indonesia (snorkeling), than onwards to China, try to get a 3 month visa in HK and explore Western China (Kashgar, Yarkand, Khotan and Turfan) before heading to Mongolia. Home with transsiberian. Challenging and surprisingly cheap (if you could pull off the Russian visa (try Shanghai)).8
I'm already in the planning stages of a similar trip. I'll be going to SE Asia in April 2013 and hopefully by then I'll have $15,000NZD in the bank.My first 2 months so far:

I would say that you are in a very unique position - this money should be spend wisely on a once in a lifetime experience. Ordinary travelling can be done sometime else! Therefore I would choose destinations which would be too expensive to just visiti them for 3 weeks holiday.
My favourites would be:
- Myanmar
- Galapagos
- Chile - the complete tour
- Carribean islands - hopping around
- and a complete tour through southern africa (although this is going to be expensive and your money will probably last for maybe 3 months)
