Booking Flight from Berau to BalikpapanHi,
I'm presently making my way from Tawau, Malaysia to Derawan and want to book flights from Berau to Balikpapan and then onward to Kuala Lumpur, hopefully in the same day. Has anyone done this or at least know how to get from Berau to Balikpapan, which is new for me.
I'ver heard that you can't book these flights online, but that they also fill up a week in advance. So, I'm not sure how I'll book them from Derawan. I'm not ready to commit to a date yet, so I'd like to keep that open, but I also don't want to sit in Berau for a week waiting for a flight to open up.
If anyone could let me know the airlines that fly between Berau and Balikpapan and how to book them, that would be great! Thanks so much!

1Trigana Airlines fly between those cities, about 40 minutes. They have an online booking site.
There is a travel agency on Derawan, it seemed closed every time I walked past it though. You may have to ask, as with many things on the island, and someone will turn up and open the door.
Berau is large and has travel agencies but as you say you wouldn't want to have to wait around there when you could be on the island.

2You can also fly from Berau to Balikpapan with Batavia (take a look at their web). I think Sriwijaya also flies from Berau to Balikpapan but their web seems to be under mantenaince right now. From Balikpapan to Kuala Lumpur, Air Asia has some days direct flights. Take a look at the web of Air Asia to know what days they make that route.

We booked our Batavia flight from Berau to Balikapan in a travel agents in Berau, where we then overnighted, before heading over to Derawan the following morning. It was listed in LP guidebook as having English speaking staff. We had tried in Tarakan, but couldn't find one that spoke English. It was best, as the one flight we had managed to book online with Trigana for Pangkalan Bun to Surabaya was cancelled and we had a terrible job getting a refund. So many flights get amended that advance booking isn't really recommended.
The agency on Derawan is just a small shop and I'm almost certain they don't have internet, they just use the phone. The door is sometimes shut, but they also do massage. My wife went for one and had to knock and they opened up for her.
Our Batavia flight was mid afternoon, so that meant we had time to leave Derawan in the morning and catch a kijang to the airport. We then overnighted in Balikpapan before moving on the next day. I doubt very much that you could make it from Derawan to Balikpapan and then KL in one day.

6Thanks for all your replies. Very helpful! In the end I had an Indonesian friend book Batavia from Berau to Balikpapan and it was a smooth trip. I later heard from another traveler on the flight that you can book Batavia online with a credit card. An internet shop just opened up on Derawan last week, so now it seems possible to book your own flights online from Derawan yourself. The internet shop is called Satria.net and it's on the main drag in Derawan.
