Transport between Prague and Berlin

Hi!
I'm visiting Berlin and Prague in December. I'd planned to take the train between them, but a friend pointed out that the Berlin Linien bus is cheaper and takes about the same amount of time. I can afford the train, but see no need to spend the money if the bus is an equally pleasant experience. Here in Canada I much prefer the train, but I don't know what bus service is like in Europe. So: will the train ride or the bus ride between Prague and Berlin provide better views? Are the buses clean? Roads smooth? Stops frequent? Thank you.

Thanks for asking this question! I too am curious what people have to say, as I'm making this trip early next year.

The train trip is amazing! Loved it, although we started in Berlin going the opposite direction. Can't speak for the bus.

The train route is much more scenic, since between Dresden and Děčín it follows the bank of the Elbe river through the Czech Switzerland and Saxon Switzerland national parks with great views of the cliffs on the opposite side of the river and lots of pretty villages. The bus takes a route further to the west and misses this region. In December the scenery won't be at its best since without leaves on the trees the national parks will be rather grey looking (unless there's snow, but there usually isn't by then), but I'd still definitely take the train for the views along the river and the comfort to be able to walk around, to go and sit in the restaurant car to have a coffee while watching out the window, etc.

Yes, thumbs up for the train ride. Go the the deutsche bahn website and you might be lucky enough to get a very special ticket price, maybe 25 euros instead of 90. Enjoy the trip!

The last time I went by bus ( actually from Denmark to Prague via Berlin) on this route was about 16 years ago and I was not impressed at all. Maybe (probably) the roads are much better now, but I´d still opt for the train, it´s much more comfortable and the scenery "goes with the train ticket". I did the trip between Prague and Berlin by train (and reverse) several times, even though the train was more expensive than the bus.

The roads in Germany are a bit boring, but the Berlin Linien bus is great - you get free coffee/tea and it's usually not very crowded. I paid 15€ for a bus ticket once and was there within 4 hours. There's also the OrangeWays bus line (it's Hungarian) which is sometimes even cheaper!

I don't think the train route between Berlin and Dresden is really that scenic, so I'd say go with the bus if you want to save a bit of money. Can't speak for the trains that go through Czech, though.

The train trip is just absolutely beautiful particularly from Dresden onwards along the Elbe river. worth the extra money..I just did this trip less than a month ago and have some amazing pictures from this section of the train ride.
