Istanbul to Rome -- How many days in each?

Hi! I'm planning a trip from Cairo to Istanbul and then to Rome. I basically have five days (Jan 8 - 13) to do Istanbul and Rome and as I am traveling by myself, can you help me figure out how many days to spend in each? Or if I should eliminate one of the destinations altogether so as to see one of these cities better?

Also take into consideration that I'm a female traveling by myself. Thank you :)

With all honesty, two FULL days and three nights is the barest minimum time to spend in Istanbul!

I've yet to visit Rome but from everything I understand the same can be said--barest minimum two FULL days and three nights.

Cairo, Istanbul and Rome are all ancient chaotic cities. After Cairo (which I have visited for over a week) Istanbul may seem a touch more quiet and orderly but of the two mega-cities, Istanbul seems more tightly packed and confusing.

If you love touring on the run and are very quick to get your bearings in a big city then fly from Istanbul to Rome on the 10th or 11th. Otherwise pick one city!

Should low budget be a prime consideration I do suggest that it will be far easier to keep such in Istanbul than in Rome.

Only 5 days...got to be one or the other, you can't do justice to either city to try to visit both.
Defo Istanbul.....

At least 3 full days in Istanbul and at least 5 days for Rome. If you haven't that time, skip some highlights and visit just the places you are most interested in.

Don't forget that if you split it then you'll lose most of one day on travelling so that is really only 2 days per city.......

.....unless you book a late afternoon flight like THY 1863 which leaves you at least a full morning in Istanbul.

Possible I guess but I personally wouldn't do it...a nibble here and a nibble there...nah :)

After Cairo, everywhere is going to feel safe. But don't be stupid.
Personally, I'm a lot more relaxed in Istanbul though.

Hi - and welcome to Thorn Tree.

What mode(s) of transport do you intend using?

5 days in Istanbul, 5 in Rome. Ergo: don't do both in this timeframe.

Also take into consideration that I'm a female traveling by myself
Sorry, why would that be relevant to how many days you should spend in a city?

Perhaps the OP wonders which she would feel safest/most comfortable in for any length of time.
On that score I'd say both cities have pitfalls and hazards for naive or unwary travellers of either sex but both can be safe for those who use common sense and stay aware of what is happening around them-just like any big city I guess.

How about a full day tour in Istanbul followed by 3-4 days in Rome?

Worried I might feel lonely if I stay in Istanbul longer than that.

You're welcome.

A full day tour of Istanbul would be too rushed to be worthwile - a quick visit to Topkapi Palace alone (and you'll have to go inside to appreciate the place) would take up at least all morning. And that's just one of Istanbul's many, many interesting sights.

You really need at least 2-3 full days and that's just to scratch the surface.

1 day would only give you time to see 3 or 4 attractions, would it be worth the expense and hassle of organising just for 1 day? I'm curious why do you think you would feel lonely in Istanbul but not in Rome. There are so many excellent hostels and family B&B's where you would be sure to meet other solo travellers for company or a chat if you wanted to.
You can enjoy a relaxed visit to one and see plenty or a mad hurtle around both and see only odd bits-only you can decide, your choice. If you have done research on both cities then by now one or the other will hold a greater attraction for you.

Why the thought that you might feel "lonely" in Istanbul but not Rome?

You are after all a solo traveler and both of these large, chaotic cities will be new to you with insufficient time to do anything but "be the tourist".
