American backpacker flyng solo for the holidaysIm a 30yr guy from southern california and will be traveling alone from Dec 22-Jan 5th. the only reservation ive made is from 12/22 - 12/25/12 to stay in bangkok. I'd like to head up north for a bit and do some trekking and of course hit the islands for some water sports, but am totally flexible. Any advice and or company is welcome! Cheers!

3Yep Alex is right you are only a month out and it will be peak season so make sure your accomodation is sorted especial in the more touristy places
An example is last year up in chiang rai on new years eve the city so busy there was no places available and people ended up sleeping in local temples.
This because a lot of Thai travel home for the holiday break to see their family and also it's the cool season up north and the best time of the year.
My advice is that if you want to head north head towards chiang Mai or chiang rai book early do you thing then get a flight direct from chiang rai to Phuket and that you starting point for the south and make sure you book as its peak season and very busy around any of the beach destinations.

4I planned on staying in the Bangkok area until the 26th or so, taking the overnight train to chaing Mai and staying there until the 29th or so, then flying to koh sumoi and island hopping thru the 3rd and fly back to Bangkok for my last couple of nights? Does this seem like a reasonable itinerary or am I trying to do too much? I've been hesitant to make reservations as I dont have set travel plans or dates except for travel to and from the US?

7It sounds like you're underestimating the logistics of peak-season Thai travel. First, make sure you can even get on a train to Chiang Mai, as they are often full that time of year. A flight makes more sense with your short timeframe but you'd still want to book that asap. Chiang Mai rooms are not quite so busy as the islands, but it can still take a while to track something down, especially if you are at all picky. Then trying to rush down and hit islands like Samui or Ko Phangan just in time for new year, again you're tempting fate with the place packed to rafters. You probably won't have time to "island hop" or at least if you try could end up spendng half the time searching for anywhere to sleep. And again flying back up to Bangkok is something you'd probably want to pre-book asap to avoid disappointment, especially the direct Samui-BKK route. If you do try to just wing it, good luck ;-)
