Travelling by car from Europe to India
Hello,We already have some experiences of travelling around Asia, staying in hostels and travelling by trains or busses, but now we are planning a trip to travel overland from Europe to India with our own car. Countries we are considering are Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and maybe some of the -stans.
Can anybody who has done a similar thing recently share some of their experiences ?
My initial questions would be regarding practical things like
- What kind of places are good to leave your car when finding a place to sleep ? Would you avoid city centres or not ?
- Is it sometimes possible to sleep in the car, or in a tent next to the car ?
I realize the safety questions are highly dependent on the specific area and the actual situation at the time of travel, but I am wondering how easy and safe these things are in such areas.
Other practical tips regarding travelling by car in these countries is also appreciated.

Hi Coen!I know this topic is from some months ago. Nevertheless I had something important to say, about the meaning of your name. In the language of Iran, Coen means ass. So be carefull about that, you might want to consider another name, so you are sure you don´t insult people :)
If you haven´t left yet, are still planning on going there and have questions about turkey or iran. You can also ask me, I have traveled quite a bit in Turkey and Iran, hitchhiking, outdoor camping. I used to live there and I know a lot of people there.

My dad drove from Coventry to India when he graduated from uni in 1973. He and a few pals took VW van with a spare engine just in case and few other parts in the back... one of the pals was a mechanic. Sounds like it was a real adventure... they went through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and through the Khyber Pass. It was pretty wild back then but a lot has changed now. I can put you in touch if you still need any advice but it's another world in those parts now.You're going to need a pretty solid motor to make it all that way!

I'd be tempted to fly to India and then buy a cheap car you are happy to bash, bump, see the suspension go on (remember how bad some of the roads are?!), have monkies climb over etc... then if you feel like it you can ditch it and enjoy a train or bus for a few days, and then buy another car. Also means yours isn't totally floored for when you need it back home. I love your idea of seeing India by car... I imagine you can stop off at various villages (the prettiest bits!) for a nights stay with a family - but maybe learn a tiny bit of Hindi, it really goes a long way, and essentially be respectful with the dress code. Sounds fantastic, hope you get on well!
