email situation in Burma

Leaving for Burma in a couple of days - I would like to know what's the latest situation on sending emails from Burma, Is yahoo.com banned? Do Internet cafes have a work-around or should I get a different email account? Which one works better? Thanks; happy travels.

I think they have lifted the ban anyway there is a work around when I was there which worked in most places. If you want you can get a Gmail account.

I think they have lifted the ban, but be warned, it's the slowest internet on the planet. I was unable to attach a single small file photo with any email, it just timed out. It seemed like I used up about an hour everytime just to read the odd email and then to send my pre-typed email. Cost for that was usually around US$1.00

I am carrhying a notebook and didn't get online for the first 2 weeks while travelling here In bagn there is wifi - even at the Pagoda! But it's v. slow. I got a new gmail addy just for this trip so I didn't have to waqd thru non-essential stuff in the inbx. Facebook has never loaded for me - its all about the speed of the connection - not cnesorhsip

I'd suggest you tell people you will be out of contact - there are better things to do in Burma than wait for stuff to download. BTW I currently have a decent connection - but its 5am !

we have been here since 5 Nov and managed to access all of the sites we normally use, including Facebook, Gmail, Couchsurfing. I don't think you will have a problem as long as you have internet access which is a rare thing. and even when you have it, it may work at the speed normal 10-15 years ago.

although gmail is OK last year a proxy server was needed for my yahoo and hotmail accounts, the cyber cafes all know how to do this. some will let you on, ie you get onto your yahoo/hotmail account and find you cant read or send emails.
fastest is skynet near MTT sulepagoda Yangon and also Taungyyi was fast as they have sat connection

Im just back & yahoo worked fine for me (accessed mostly on smartphone using wifi). We had great connection in Yangon & Bagan (& oddly at top of the mountain at golden rock!!) but Inle internet was unbearable!! yahoo didn't work there but that was to do with incredibly poor connection...

Kyaukme was the fastest place I found, even better than Yangon they said it was Chinese. Bagan, Mandalay and Inle were all out or too slow to use.
