I stay at Huy Kea too. I will be there in a fortnight and expect the usual reception. The Bangkok train will be late, but as it's supposed arrival time is about 2pm, it still leaves plenty of time to cross the border.
Has anyone noticed that the train timetable shows the afternoon train takes one hour less than the morning one?

I'm now looking at Poipet to Battambang options, is there a direct bus or do I hop on the one coming from Siem Reap.

Just get in a share taxi from Piopet to Battambang. It cost me $8 before.

Sounds good, but now I'm starting to read things about Battambang being one big tourist trap?

I admit alt, that I havent been in BTB for 3 years but I serously doubt that it is a tourist trap... there would have to have been a gigantuan leap for this to be the case and I cannot see any incentive for there to have been such a massive change. BTB is a relatively sleepy city. It is worlds away from Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Some poeple might wonder what to do there. Personally I love it.

I was there 2 years ago, no tourist trap then, can't say it was my favourite place in Cambodia but not bad for a couple of days. 1 day we cycle out north along the country roads. Next day tuktuk around some temples etc. to the south. More pricey than where? Rooms were fairly cheap, about the same as other towns, food the same.

Keep reading or read something else re BB. My last time there was 2 years ago. Still pretty slow-paced, less expensive than PP.

I was in Battambang in March. Not a tourist trap, but my driver did get shaken down for a few bucks by a traffic cop over some fictitious traffic violation.

The quality of guesthouse rooms compared to the price you pay is great. One of the best in the region IMHO. I stayed in a place a couple of times with a large swimming pool and great rooms only $15 a night, but can never remember the name. Alternatively the Royal guesthouse had good rooms which ranged from $7. Its a sleepy town but certainly worth a visit. Don't miss the prahok factory!
