How long does it take a fire to burn out

http://www.hemeltoday.co.uk/community/a414-fire-update-1-4469750

How long should it take this mountain of wood to burn out, I need to go up the M1 on Thursday. It is only a bit of smoke for God's sake. Is it necessary to close the A414.

After the pile up on the M5 last year no one will take any chances

Surely they can apply a speed limit. Last night the whole of SW Herts was grid locked because of one poxy pile of wood.

Sympathies to nearby residents who are needing emergency water supplies, as fire fighting is using up all local supplies. Better to close road, than have deaths like pile up on M5 caused by fireworks at a rugby club near Gloucester, if I remember right?

One huge pile of wood, not exactly poxy!

It was described as a "recycling centre" but I don't see what is recycling about allowing a huge mountain of wood to accumulate over years.
The fireworks display by the M5 was not quite the same scenario which was a sudden wall of smoke after dark when they lit the fire. This has been burning since Saturday. Is it really a risk during day light? May be we should close roads when there is fog if it is.
This is going to take weeks to smoulder out. If it is a risk then may be they shouldn't have allowed it to be there for the last 4 years at least that I know of.
The point of recyling is that you do exactly that, recycle, not accumulate.

I am only going from Watford to Redbourn. 15 minutes normally but last night just about every road was grid lock. Thankfully the A414 was open tonight so back to normal although the fire is still burning. Hopefully it wont flare up again.
What is it with Hemel Hempstead and fires. Buncefield is only about a mile from this one.

I would much prefer to drive through fog than smoke. depending on how thick the smoke is, this may be an over reaction.

Excessive smoke can mess your engine up anyway.

Maybe the reason to accumilate it was to wait for the price of scrap wood to go up???

Maybe it is easier to make an insurance claim if it ever caught fire rather than recycle it..

On Sunday morning, coming round the M25 from Kent, I could see the fire from shortly after I came out of the Dartford Tunnel. It surprised me I couldn't find a news or roads report on a fire that was visible from 30 miles away until Monday. It was a bit confusing because it was the second, smaller fire that was most clearly visible from the M25 once you were close to it, and not being in the business of looking over my shoulder while driving on a motorway, I didn't realise it was a second fire.

There were 2 fires in the Herts area on Sunday morning. I first saw a very large plume of smoke off to the east, must have been in the St Albans/ Hatfield area. Don't know what it was but looked big. Came back 2 hours later and there was no sign of any smoke, just the wood mountain smouldering.
It would be interesting to know what the nature of this recycling business was. The news again referred to it as a recycling centre this morning but I never saw much eveidense of recycling. Is there money in accumulating a mountain of wood?

Anyone remember Buncefield? Cars that went through the smoke were conking in seconds
My speedometer packed up and the mileage guage went potty. Soon righted itself though.... Pah ! !
