Car rental at Salt Lake City airport / drive to Idaho

I'll be renting a car at the Salt Lake City airport & driving on Highway 15 north to Pocatello, Idaho. We're arriving mid-afternoon & will head out right after we rent the car. My questions are:

1) Can we pick up a rental car right at the airport or do we need to take a shuttle? If it depends on the rental agency, which ones have cars right at the airport?

2) How is the drive up Highway 15 into Pocatello? I don't have a lot of experience driving in icy or snowy conditions and I am a little worried. The weather forecast calls for temps of low-50s throughout my trip, but that is still a week away. We will be on the road (hopefully) by 4pm.

Thanks!

I-15 doesn't cross any high passes (I think Malad Summit is the high point, at 5600'; SLC airport is at about 4225'), so in mid-November you should be fine barring a really bad storm. The NWS 6-10 day forecast is for above normal temperatures and normal precip in that entire region, so a really bad storm seems highly unlikely.

15 goes north then briefly turns west.
You take the exit north for Pocatello before Tremonton.
You will drive through a narrow canyon until you reach Pokie.
Very attractive and well traveled by big trucks.

You are not likely to see much snow on the highway. but ice on bridges is a concern. Gentle on the steering wheel and accelerator/brakes. 4pm is nearly dark, so melted ice will be freezing again.

When you come out of arrivals gate, you cross six lanes of roadway, there you will see an entrance for the car rental desk. Some of them keep the cars in the parking garage there and in nearby parking lots.

Driving at night after a 50 degree day may result in black ice on elevated portions of the roadway like bridges, culverts any portion of the road that is not touching the earth.
It does not take extremly cold temps to freeze the bridges.
Don't lock the brakes, don't over steer, don't speed, on ice. Easy does it.
Have your navigator keep a look out for brake lights in the distance, that may be a tip off to use more caution up ahead.

Nothing to worry about, OP. All of the major car agencies are certain to be at the airport. If it's in the 50s that day, it won't be freezing on I-15 in time for your 2:45 drive to Pocatello. The day's highest temps are typically at 4 p.m., and it takes quite a while for them to fall.

And even when air temperatures fall, the road itself remains warmer than the air (ask any rattlesnake -- this is why you see them on the back roads at night between late April and late October, warming themselves on the pavement, which retains the day's heat). On an Interstate highway that gets a lot if traffic, the pavement it even less prone to freezing because the friction with tires keeps the pavement warmer.

You're quite unlikely to encounter any ice anywhere on your route, including the bridges, between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on a day where Salt Lake City's temperatures were in the 50s. So don't worry. You'll be fine.

You'll be fine. That is a really easy drive, even in winter. I drove it in late December a couple years ago and was surprised how easy it was. I was driving a Corolla, so nothing special.

I think most people answered your questions but my quick input

1) Yes I've rented from the SLC airport many times and all of them at right there. You will need to cross the street to get to the rental building but that takes 2 minutes. no problem!

I know you didn't ask for this but you definitely want to take advantage of car rental discount codes if you haven't found them already.

I've written an article about it that I think you might find useful with a collection of rental codes.
