budget ??

Hi there, well this is my first posting, i have been following the threads for err months , so i am aware of the issues re accommodation . visa's , flights and rising costs..so the question is what should we use as a ball park figure for a daily budget , ( this would be for a couple who are 60) we are passably experienced travelers (for want of a better word).. aiming to be in Myanma feb time-ish, fairly fluid re the dates , will be aiming at guest house type accommodation 20/30 dollars per night maybe? no flights just trains and or tourist type bus, happy to eat on the street type food places, is 100 /125 dollars per day for 2 people reasonable amount or am i being unrealistic, ..if there is anyone out there now or just recently back i would welcome your input or advice
Cheers Trev

It's plenty, although the country is considerably more expensive than LP prices suggest.

Should be plenty, rooms are now by far the biggest expense if you don't fly. Break down your expenses, Rooms, food/drink, transport, trips, entrance fees, gifts. Breakfast is included in room price usually.

Food prices are still low, eating in local eateries $10/day/person is enough even with an odd beer thrown in. Going to fancier places (even if for locals) triples the price. Still possible to find rooms in the $30 range. Buses and trains still cheap, like $10 per trip. Bagan entrance $10, Swedagon $5 etc. Taxis in Rangoon $12 airport, $2-6 inside the city (paid in Kyats naturally).

Problem is finding the rooms. Prebooking everything is problematic as then you chisel you itinerary in stone. Travel agencies can help getting rooms, but they have connections only to mid level hotels in the 40-70 dollar range, if you change your plans.

Hi there , thanks to all for the information / advice ,,, gives me something to work with regarding budgeting ... not fond of prebooking but do realise rooms are problematic .. will be prebooking first and last couple of nights then go with the flow and ring ahead .. will factor in the odd hit to the budget as in dearer room here and there if needed ...will report back after the visit
Thanks Trev

In Bagan now and we travel as you do - I can confirm that we are averaging about $60 day for 2 excluding flights (one $80 pp heho-bagan) but including trains (which cost more than the buses). We've paid from $12 to $70 for accommodation usually around $20-$30 - paying $20 right now for a/c ensuite at Inn Wa in Bagan (rec). Most meals we spend around 5000-7000k for 2 including beer (usually 2000 for a bottle or 2x draft @ 600k). I'd say bring $100/day to be on the safe side you'll be comfortable.

You don't need to pre-book all - see my earlier post today (wifi here free but real slow) - we prebooked Yangon apart from that we've just shown up or booked a day before - Inle was the only real issue we had - ended up paying $70, other option was the monestary - even Bagan is not so bad - lots of cheapies not in the book - while Inle ONLY hotels are all in the LP - and none of them are very cheap . Prebook your start and end cities and play it by ear - I imagine it will be easier in Feb anyways.

BTW it's an awesome country - so easy to travel, little hassle, the people are genuinely nice.
