Hi Laura,

If memory serves me right it's around 12 hours and leaves Bangkok's Hualamphong station about 19:30hrs. I think it was about US$12 but that was some time ago; reckon on double that to be on the safe side.

Have fun.

The train leaves at 7:30pm and arrives in Surat Thani 7:06am. Third class ticket is 257 Baht and the cheapest bed you can get for 668 Baht.

2nd class fan sleeper carriage is best (a/c can get too cold). You can buy a combined train / bus / ferry ticket at Hualampong station or online. Information and timetables here.

Just if someone is reading that in half a year there would be a different exchange rate. You are talking from the past so again there was a different rate.
That would be a different situation if we were talking about Cambodia where the us dollar is used as a currency.

I am planning a similar trip leaving Bangkok on the evening of Dec. 29th, taking the overnight train to Surat Thani (train #85), then the ferry, but I plan on heading to Koh Samui instead of Koh Phangan (I believe it's the same ferry, but makes two stops). It seems pretty simple and relatively cheap. This website is helpful:

I am a 30 yr old architect/musician from San Francisco making the trip alone as well, so hit me up if you want to combine forces.

Koh Tao is nice to visit if you have time to do this trip.

When I did it I took the night train, fan car, and it changed my life.

There's splitting hairs and there's splitting hairs. The Dollar to Baht ratio has hardly changed (between 29 and 31 to the dollar) in the last two years.
