Pergamon Hill Site Turkey closed???

Hi there-
Could somebody clarify whether the road and/or gondala up to the hilltop at Pergamon has been closed this year 2012??? I was looking forward to going up there for the site/view when we got there on our small group tour on Wenesday 4th July- but our guide (who was very personable) said the road and the chairlift had been closed for "some time"- we commented that was a pity because it even looked spectacular from below- we only went through the associated site on the nearby plain

Subsequently I meet somebody when I came home that had gone up the top in a small bus (lift was operating too) a few weeks after I was there- its all very perplexing

I would appreciate some advice from those who know that area

Thanks

I was there in early October, 2012 and the brand-new looking overhead cable car system was certainly in operation and moving people efficiently. The road to the top however is closed to ordinary (bus, private vehicle) traffic shortly past the cable car station. There is a reasonable amount of parking near the station.

Do expect some waiting time especially in the mid to late morning when the commercial tour groups seem to be trying to be the "first" there...

Perhaps there have been some technical problems with the cable car system as it seems a bit unusual with two cars moving in each direction on a true loop. The road however seemed to have been blocked off for quite some time.

OMG I didn't know!

Thanks for alerting us. This leads to more questions:-

1) Will the closure be permanent or is it just temporary while undergoing repairs etc?
2) If the road is reopening does anyone know when?

I wonder if you can still walk up using the old Roman Road which you get to thru the hole in the fence?

How long did it take you to walk up to the top via the old Roman road?

About an hour- but when you stop to look at everything it takes half a day at least!
