Hotel reservation for Bolivian visa

I read on another thread that you needed a hotel reservation when you get a Bolivian visa at the border on the Puno-Copa route. Is this really enforced? Surely many travelers show up without a hotel reservation! I haven't been able to find contact info for the hotel I want to stay at and don't really want to make a reservation somewhere that I have no intention of staying.
Thanks for your replies!

You don't need a reservation. They want to know the name of the hotel you're staying in on the immigration paper. Just pick any hotel. My friend just wrote "Hotel Copacabana"...

Crossed this border a few times last year, like written before you don't need a reservation but they ask you to write down a ho(s)tel were you will be staying but nobody will check this.

depend what nationality you are, different regulations for different nationalities. US citizens are meant to show a letter of invitation or a hotel reservation. How strict they are with this will depend on the individual official and what mood he is in.

When I crossed with a South African passport in 2010 they didn't ask a single question or want to know anything. We paid, they stamped the visa in our passports, we walked out (see my South America 2010 travelogue).

On the other hand I know of an Indonesian girl who wasn't allowed in at all - they put her on the bus back to Puno. Seems like certain nationalities have to obtain a visa before-hand. And there are special rules for US citizens, part of which is a hefty visa fee ($135).
